He has taken four for Man City. He missed three and scored one. He is really not a penalty taker.

A mate is a Man City fan. First thing he did when we went to penalties was text me and say “really hope Sterling doesn’t take one.”

I doubt Saka is either.

Well…

- First, balance of game, Italy deserved that. We scored probably too early and from 40 minutes invited pressure. We limped to full time and extra time, and without Chiesa being injured, we probably lose that earlier

- Saka? I was expecting him to be one to be taken off when Sancho and Rashford were coming on. Notwithstanding that, I wonder if the plan was for him to be five. I almost think that when we went 2-1 up, we put on paper our best taker next.

- I think the big lesson here is to be more positive. Southgates done a good job but he is inherently a cautious manager. And by being cautious, we probably lost (or didn’t win) today.

- Bollocks.

Frustrating that we had a great start but then proceeded to concede the initiative ( has Southgate been reading Lee Johnson’s book on clever football tactics?) but equally frustrating  that Pickford saved 2 Italy penalties but we still managed to lose the shoot out.

Our missed penalties were with stop start run ups and trying to be clever. Kane and Maguire took no nonsense pens so perhaps that’s a lesson to learn going forward.

It's coming Rome  ...............I just don;t get it, Gary Lineker just said it , my coach also told  me 20 years ago.   When the pressures on. the keeper always wants to be a hero, and dives.....SO blast it down the middle.  Still there you go.  I have to say Italy were the better side. I am sure England will have a good World Cup.   Most of all i feel sorry for Jordan Pickford.........who did his job.

Forget the penalties. Italy dominated the second half and Southgate didn't have the balls to use our subs until it was too late. He totally blew that tactically.

Southgate is in credit, he got us to a final afterall. But this evening he got most of the calls wrong. Too negative tonight.

Rashford just needed to put it half way across the other side of the goal. He saw the goalkeeper going one way and he still tried to go right for the corner of the other side of the goal

He hits the target it’s in,think you can forgive a shit penalty that is saved but to not hit the target is a bit shocking

As a goalkeeper, 98% of the time you dive one way or the other. So I agree, keep it low and in the middle and you'll probably score.

Lots of people saying Grealish should be taking one. Well, it looked to me when they were in the huddle that he wanted one.
Perhaps as usual, Southgate didn’t trust him.
Shaw is a set piece specialist. Perhaps he should’ve stepped up as well.
How about the most senior player and ex captain, Henderson. He was quick enough to grab the ball for a penalty in the recent friendly, where was he tonight!!
Looking at the huddle, I’d guess Southgate had Grealish & Shaw down as sudden death takers.
Big mistake.

Grealish,Sterling,stones to mention 3

Not to go over thing I have already posted but Sterling has a very poor penalty record. What is the point of him waving his willy around taking a penalty he is likely to miss just to look confident. And why on Earth would Southgate let him?

Edit: Grealish has taken (and scored) one penalty in youth football. Stones has never taken one at any sort of professional level.
