could the World cup be held in one country(for ever)?

Listening to five live with their thoughts that the olympics could be held in one country due to costs for ever.

Would that suit football as regards to the Euros and World cup?

What do they mean? The same country every time?

USA?

The IOC is based in France, while the traditional choice would be Greece and Europe is the best placed time zone to cater to the most viewers. They could sell it to the highest bidder but I suspect USA is the most likely destination if they did this. All speculation of course!

I was just thinking of money really. Would be a shame to have it in one place all the time, would lose the worldwide essence of humanity and differences in culture.

It would mean the end of building white elephants for the Olympics but I wonder which country they would choose.

Whoever pays the most?

Qatar

Saudi Arabia

It is a difficult one.

On the one hand, I think it great the World Cup and Olympics travel around the world but, on the other hand, lots of countries have found the supposed economic benefits of hosting to be illusionary and have ended up with expensive white elephants which have cost far more in public money than have been received in additional revenue from hosting.

I think I support the Olympics and World Cup still moving around the world but only to cities where the required infrastructure is either largely in place or where the country can genuinely show it has a use for that which is built. At the moment, I don’t think FIFA or IOC feel any sort of duty of care to the hosting countries and, if they really want to be a force for good, they have to start being ethical and saying “no” to countries that are clearly going to be making a loss or building stadiums they cannot use.

With the Olympics, I also wonder about the possibility and practicality of at least some temporary infrastructure that can be transported by ship from one event to another, thus further reducing the build costs costs for the host country or the need to build something for a one off event in a sport that is not going to gain traction in a country long term.

Think the olympics could/should be changed to country/multiple cities rather than singular city. That way the facilities can be built for longer term. Say in GB we hosted the olympics again you could have select events in London where facilities are, Scotland/Wales/Northern Ireland could put forward to host certain events where the facilities would be of benefit after the games, all pool based events in one city, new velodrome at another city. That way you don’t have white elephants because the cities want the new development that’s hosted there and can focus on a few developments rather than everything being in one city. You then also likely have more purpose built facilities which could be used if it was country based rather than city based and then less needing to be built perhaps

No way will it happen for one reason.

Money

FIFA/UEFA/IOC are money making machines (interestingly all HQ'd in Switzerland.......)

Australia is one of the safest places in the world. It is an island. It has great stadiums like Optus stadium in Perth below which has a capacity of 60,000. There are also other stadiums like the MCG which holds 100,000. Adelaide Oval which holds 55,000. Suncorp which holds 52,000. Along with great beer, good food, what else would you need to hold a world cup any where in the world. Oh and plus me that talks bull shit but any OTIB members are ok at my place as long as they BYO Grog.

Football can be a wonderful game with good sportsmanship, opportunities for us all to travel (unless you live in Wales where the leader tells you where to go and what type of holiday you must have)

Sadly it has been run by very corrupt people driven by personal egos and financial gains and by large organisations, now predominantly of the gambling sector.

The ideology of 'taking football round the world' was another con in many locations, particularly S.A & Qatar. The term White Elephants for SA make me laugh where the unnecessary Durban stadium (stunning when new)  cost more than putting water and sanitation into 80000 slum homes

Qatar has a local population less than Briz and no one really wants to go there.

With fans having absolutely no say in anything to do with football, we must wait for the power moguls, politicians, gaming companies and big businesses to make these decisions

Build an enormous island in the middle of the Atlantic or Pacific. Host all international sport there.

Probably the best suggestion I have ever seen you make. Would be my version of Paradise island

We live out in the bush a bit about 1.5 hours south of Perth and these buggers always come out around November which is the start of summer and they sun bathe on the road and of which most get run over. Had a few last year on my drive way as well. If you make a noise they will slither away but im so shit scared of them. They are Dugite snakes.

Spiders ok by me mate but check your shoes in the morning.
