We all had to start somewhere, 20man is highly regarded by most on here and has been working in local bristol radio for years, and hasnt made it up higher in the sports journalist league.

Twentyman is an adopted well respected Bristolian.

He’s lived and is settled in the area for years. He’s is happy his his job - why would he want to move anywhere?

@REDOXO I hope you don't mind but I have copied the text in question as I think Gregor explains his issue quite well. If Nigel only does in-house media then the club control the narrative completely. We all heard the sycophantic commentary on RobinsTV last season, and a lack of third-party media coverage only serves to allow the club to put out more items in that vein.

Gregor's argument is as follows:

"No show Nigel and Francois steals it

Pearson chose not to do any independent media after the game, speaking only briefly to the club's own media channels instead. It was a disappointing decision from someone who only months ago 'hit out' at club-controlled media, arguing the merits of non-club questioning.

Of course, this is only pre-season, to keep things in perspective, and a one-off disappearing act is no big deal, with the manager promising to speak on Saturday after the MK Dons game. It was however the first time in the almost five years of this reporter's time covering the club that a manager has refused to speak to the press or radio after a pre-season game.

To explain the difference, Robins TV front-man Ian Downs asked few questions on the many missing players on Tuesday, in a post-match chat with Pearson on the club channels. There were no mentions of Ryley Towler, Alex Scott, Joe Williams, Callum O'Dowda, Han-Noah Massengo, Sam Bell and James Morton, who were when not involved in this encounter, but with plenty of fans eager to know of their whereabouts. Also why Nathan Baker departed the match at the 45-minute mark: pre-planned or injury-related?

Pearson has had an at-times strained relationship with the media across his career and here's hoping all round that this was just a blip. The former Leicester City boss may have had his own reasons for passing up the chance to speak, though nothing was conveyed.

There is no need to speak on every occasion, certainly, though the manager has been little available over the last months bar for club interviews. At a time when scrutiny, transparency and local journalism is much needed, it was a worrying sign and something we hope is buried into insignificance all too quickly. Supporters always deserve answers, given the club is built upon their passion and means.

In stark contrast Danny Cowley was generous with his time speaking to the media following the match. The former Huddersfield Town boss explained that young winger Marlee Francois - another key facet of the game that Pearson wasn't asked about - was offered to Pompey to use as they didn't have enough players to complete the match. The have-nots coming up trumps, as Francois netted a late equaliser against his own club."

Gmg was right to ask the questions.

As a club we've long been too secretive and a manager who quite clearly loathes the press isnt a great help with things.

NP hasnt yet earned the right here to anything yet, and this distance is not helping the matter.

As others have stated what if he starts poorly. Not going to go well isn't it?

Surely that mindset comes from the VERY TOP of the club not the First Team Manager (whether than be Lee Johnson, Dean Holden or Nigel Pearson)?

I know you have your own views on Pearson, but I think (quite rightly) people are keeping their powder dry until we're a few games into the new season.

Most acknowledged last season was a dead rubber. Ideally you'd probably want to see a bit more instant impact perhaps but it's only fair to see how he gets on after bringing in a few players.

You're right though - if we start badly, this is the sort of behaviour which will annoy fans.

Pearson's interviews have almost without exception been excellent imo. Very informative and none of the BS we have become accustomed to.

There will always be a few fans who don't take to a new manager's personality - they said it on here early on and continue to swarm to comment on any thread where they can continue to stick the knife in a bit. These individuals very predictably look for any little thing to criticise him, but it's clear to me most fans seem to not only like Pearson, but are delighted he's here.

As for this particular little contre temps with Gregor, all a bit silly and childish on the part of a journalist who needs NP far more than NP needs him, and who had been promised an interview after the MKDons match anyway.

If we start badly fans will be annoyed regardless. He could speak to Gregor at any time Gregor clicks his fingers, he could tell us he's been putting in 90 hour weeks to sort the situation out or even announce that his intervention has resulted in NHS Nurses being given the full 15% pay rise they want but people would still be annoyed with him anyway..........that's what happens now even when your team loses a single game of football for the first time in 15 games....people just get very angry, call you irresponsible, incompetent, pathetic etc. etc. In fact we even had a poster on here who called for three England players never to play for the country EVER AGAIN after missing penalties in the first final we have reached for 55 years.

You implied GMcG would have a better job if he was any good - then totally ignored that implication for Twentyman. Do you ever stop to think about what you post?

I’m not sure the relevance of Nige not giving an interview v Pompey has much, if any correlation to results once the league season starts.

”if he makes a bad start…..”, never

”if he makes a good start”.

Neither has any real relevance to interview protocol….but easy to beat Nige with if you’re anti-him.

We all have some bias, and this thread is a perfect example of it.

Very much want NP to succeed Dave and I believe he has been a breath of fresh air regards the interviews he has given and the honesty and no nonsense way in which he speaks.
Still think he should give the local journo 2 mins of his time though, friendly game or not.
A view on one doesn’t mean the same view on the other.

I agree.  Courtesy if nothing else….but then again, playing Devil’s Advicate, what is Dave Barton’s role in this…he arranges the interview set-up.  Might not have been Nige’s decision.

Indeed. Let’s just hope it doesn’t end up in some petty ongoing dispute as despite its many critics the EP is the only daily ‘independent’ view we get of the club (I know that can be argued as well but you get the point!).  Sure it will all be amicable and everyone will move on as adults.

Stockhausen has GMG beat there, wasn't it the day after he said he was going on holiday because nothing was happening that Kodjia signed?

Yeah that rings a bell.

Often been repeated by Gregor though...

"Nothing happening tonight" followed swiftly by a club announcement, or visa versa on transfers.

He literally seems to just regurgitate whatever is written on here.

In fact, can you think of many instances where he's genuinely broken any exclusive news..?

There must be some, but his record is pretty dire at best.

Well Atkinson was hours (or less) after Gregor said nothing happening today, so does then have Stockhausen beaten again..?

For me the anti bullshit of Nigel,,the straight talking & generally being 'on the level' is a tonic...compared to what we've had to endure for a number of years I believe his approach is showing us as supporters of the club respect.

Long may it continue.

I'd argue that as Kodjia was more high profile (record signing at the time?) It's a bit more grievous.

This has all the makings of another SoD scenario.

Fans originally liked his in depth interviews, but when results weren't to fans liking, and pressure mounted, and ' stupid questions' came to the fore from the media...we all know what happened next.

It'll be an interesting watch if we start off poorly...

Never liked them to be fair - found I forgot I was listening halfway through

NP interests me - it’s slow, but I like the way he avoids stuff, it’s clever

I think Gregor is far better than you’re giving him credit for in terms of exclusives.

His reporting during the Dean Holden appointment was absolutely spot on, for example, to the point where he was actually going out on a bit of a limb at times in going against what many of the nationals were saying. He was bang on throughout though - and wasn’t particularly popular on here at the time for being the bearer of bad news!

Personally, I think we’re fairly lucky with Gregor in comparison to others elsewhere and some of those who’ve come before him. There are times he doesn’t really seem to read the room in terms of his questioning, which can end up making interviews/interviewees awkward, but he’s never afraid to hold the club to account and that is much, much easier said than done with relationships to keep.

Personally. I think this is fair and accurate. I just wonder if there is a bit of tit for tat going on or maybe Gregor got a bit over excited over NPs no show. I guess we will see what happens next!

It’s a curious punt to take, publishing something like that at this stage of the summer, but also worth saying none of us know what their off-camera relationship is like.

And, as someone else said, it could be aimed at Dave Barton and co as much as the manager.

He may be unfortunate that we now live in a world where media click bait is part & parcel of life and he has to produce his fair share - but I still think that for someone who's job is to effectively build relationships within the club, in order to gain inside snippets & be a point for exclusive, accurate stories, he falls well short.

To the point where I often wonder if someone at the club winds him up just for a laugh..!

You'd expect a journalist (especially local specialist) to get some things right - but the amount he gets wrong means it's hard to trust anything, whether it's right or wrong, until it's confirmed elsewhere.

I think you were in the minority. Many said they enjoyed SoDs interviews and comments early doors...then it just got silly as we know.

NP is marmite. He grates on me in the way he responds to questions.

Always comes across as a chore and like he's Mr Angry. I get the impression it's an act and away from football he's a big softy.

The Professional side I guess...some people feel they have to act like the alpha male to get the response they want or impression given. That's how I see it. Others will disagree I'm sure.

I think that’s pretty fair.

As for being a softy I think he segments his life into personal & professional, outside sport he clearly has interests that are somewhat at odds with his sergeant major work persona.

I actually really enjoy his interviews & as someone who has been accused of this in work, also think that he just needs to tone down the clear irritation when dealing with Gregor.

Gregor (who I like) for his part has to think about reading the room a little bit more, repeatedly asking the same questions day after day isn’t smart, nor is ploughing on when it is obvious Pearson isn’t going to add anything further.

He thinks before he responds and why we don’t get the usual managerial cliches from him. To me he’s a proper manager

Former players who played under him say what a decent bloke Nige is. Casper was particularly gushing about him. It’s certainly possible to be popular despite being the man who selects the team.

I don’t think Nige is like that at all - based on what I’ve read from former players. He’s certainly not a man who rules thru fear

He’s got similar traits to Sean Dyche in as much that he’s fair to everyone. Says it as it is even if it’s uncomfortable to hear.

I can’t wait until he guest speaker at Senior Reds.
