if we only bred strikers

where's the joy

if the big money is in players who score goals and you are a selling club why don't you specialise in strikers?

why breed full backs or wingers if the big cash is in the goal getters attic?

even the gas have sold off a string of goal scorers over the years, while we seem content to spread our betting across all positions.

I can see some logic to it but why not build a squad of strikers and maximise the cash generation

how would you change things?

Because in order to develop one striker, you need to have 10 other players of his age group, plus subs if he is to play any kind of competitive game at youth level. Then you need at least enough others to provide opposition in training. So to develop your stable of strikers we would need to have 30 or so other young lads in each age group. Naturally one or two of those will show enough promise in his own position to warrant first team football, and then a sale, of his own.

Players do not play in isolation, and they are not developed in isolation.

Who do you suggest as the breeding couples? It'll be 20 years or so before we reap the benefit.

Or someone on our scouting staff who know a good striker when they see one. As the op has stated, other clubs find them and move them on for good profits. It's an area we've always fallen short of in my whole time of watching City.

Perhaps it's the heat but I can't recall a striker that we've brought up through the ranks and sold at a profit, since Chris Garland, one that's turned out to be any good. I know we've brought in some and resold but can't think of anyone that's come through the ranks.

Waiting for the long list now.

It’s certainly not an area we specialise in is it.. I suppose you could make a case for Bobby Reid being a homegrown striker we sold on for a sizeable profit but as we all know he isn’t naturally a striker as such is he.

I'll give you him, even if he's not a proper striker, as in, one of two. He plays more like a roaming attacking midfielder really, apart from the first half of the season 17/18 was it?

Any more?

It is poor how few we have produced over the last 50 odd years, when you think about it.

Totally agree. We had the Plummers in the 90’s I think, who never made the grade but were highly thought of. It’s certainly a reoccurring theme with City. Hopefully this latest batch will break the mould. Is it the most difficult position to break into & hold down as a youngster? COYR

The gas sold their striker Barry Hayles to Fulham for £2million - we sold our defender Lloyd Kelly to Bournemouth for £13million - what’s your point?!

Peter Spiring was an odd one, sold to Liverpool for £60k and never seen again. Can remember him going in for a tackle with a defender and the ball burst. Can't remember him scoring many goals though.

Strange, I always remember it as £50k. Think he went from Liverpool to Luton.

I though I must add that there's been an awful lot of inflation between 1998 and 2019, when their respective transfers took place. Might well be that Hayles would have fetched a lot more in 2019, particularly with the premiership awash with money then.

If you are talking about LK, then probably not very much at all as his goal scoring record was pretty poor ?.

I was talking about Webster, but yes, LK also went for a massive amount of money.

More than most of the strikers we've sold..!

From way back to Galley, Garland, Ritchie we have always sold good strikers, to progress we must hang on to them.

We sell our assets like most clubs, I dont hold out much hope of our current crop taking us anywhere much, but hang on and hope NP can make a silk purse out of sows ear....wont be easy.
