This part I agree with you about. Using figures however is completely misleading. Wigan in the mid 90's averaged crowds of less than 2000. Just over 10 years later another 17000 people from Wigan suddenly remembered they had a football club.

Between 79/80 and 80/81 our gates dropped by 50 percent and by the time we'd hit rock bottom we'd lost 75 percent of those who were there 5 years before.

Good football brings good crowds.

And that's the blunt truth of it. And it's also the truth, in my opinion, that if Rovers had managed to build that ~20k seater stadium they've been promised since forever, and if they had been a decently run club for the last 30 years or so, they may well have attained and secured a reasonable parity with us, and probably be a Championship team. And if that was case, they'd obviously be enjoying a lot more gate than their scant 6-8k or whatever it is/was.

The reason their fans are almost nowhere to be seen at all is that their club, on and off the field, have been a consistent shower for nigh on these last 30 years.

Their problem is that the vast majority of youngsters are choosing City over the sags. I wish it were more but that's a fact.

I'm not sure their support can recover as they've pretty much lost a generation to us, apart from a small %.

Great for us though.

The age divide has been apparent for ages.  We have supporters split across the ages.  There is predominantly older.

Next time there is shots of each others crowds in the paper, online etc., check it out.  You'll notice it.

Thought they were supposed to be ‘loyal and true’...“if they play on the street we’ll watch from the pavement blah blah blah bollocks”?

You’re right, they’re no better than anyone else, in fact, considering they were getting less than 6k home fans in L1 after a few defeats they’re probably more fickle than most.

Grubby little plastics.

You forgot the contradictory gas logic that your post is true, and they are loyal and true (all of them), but additionally they would get loads more fans if they didn’t play in a shithole.

This could be true but it will never be proved one way or the other as none of their pie in the sky schemes will ever happen.

New stadiums increase the attendances of whoever builds one, Rovers would be no exception. That only proves that they are no more ‘real’, ‘loyal’ or ‘unique’ than anyone else....and certainly no better than us.

I hear them piping up all the time asking the question “how many would City get if they played home games at the Mem?”

Well, I’m confident we’d fill it far more than they do. For starters AG was hardly a state of the art stadium a few years ago and I remember the home section of the East End being pretty full every game I went in there, often being opened up further to meet demand....the majority stood up for 90 minutes despite having the option of sitting on a crappy backless plastic seat. I don’t think a bit of terrace would scare our fans away.

I'm sure you are right and we'll be finding out this season with the rail seating going in.

Yep, and I wish it was more too.

We can take the mickey out of the sags all day long saying, where have their thousands of loyal and true disappeared to? But in our 70s pomp we could boast close to 40k for the big games, so where did they all go?

Whereas a large portion of potential next gen Rovers fans will be more attracted by the bright lights of Ashton Gate than the gloom of a scrubby allotment in Horfield (and who could possibly blame them), it is also true, unfortunately, that a portion of potential new City fans have been lost to the big Prem glamour boys like Liverpool and Chelsea and Man City and so on. Because in the same period of time - the last thirty years - we have hardly covered Bristol in glory either.

We have both shed fans, but because of (mis)fortunes on the field it's been far more blue than red. That trend will continue so long as Rovers remain in the basement, and at the Memorial.

It would seem that of the majority of Rovers fans that do remain 'loyal and true' are the sworn die-hards of the older generation, who wouldn't and couldn't shift allegiance any more than we would or could. Their casuals, which in general make up the lion's share of any team's attendances, are long gone.

Great Post OneCity.

We dont come out of those percentages particularly well ourselves, just better than the sags. That's nothing to be proud of.

There is a right belter on Gaschat today. See the following;

Bottom Line, how much could you sell the club for right now. 20, 30, 40 million. Then the new owner would still have to put there hand in there pockets for another 30 40 or 50 million to build a stadium and another 10 to re build the squad that's the realms of 80 90 100 million, for a league 2 club. The Saints are on sale now if you can come up with 200 million in the Prem.

So a Premier League side, with about 140mil a year in television revenue and a modern stadium is 200mil, yet this deluded fool thinks up to 40mil to buy the fewers...

Wonder if it has crossed his mind yet that companies that make a significant loss each and every year don't have any value, and the only asset they have - the stadium - is worthless as the money Wally put in to the club has the stadium as collateral against his loan.

Reality is, unless they find someone with more money - but equally as daft as - their current owner, they are stuck with him.

Which, to be fair is not a bad place for them to be, he did finance the club during the pandemic, and whilst they are unlikely to be throwing the cash around anytime soon, there have been no payday loans or anything like that.

There is another poster who describes Wally as a business man... yeah, with his junior position at the bank and his failed attempts to get a role with FIFA, he is a right go-getter.

Considering Ipswich was reportedly £40m, with their assets, fanbase difference, and 2-division head start compared to the sags, even £20m for the sags is beyond delusional.

As Rob says, what would you get for £20M? Fark all as I see it. A shite, worthless playing squad, a stadium with charges against it up to it's value (so £0 then) and the name of a tatty little basement football club which is losing money hand over fist.

£20M? Sounds a bargain! ?? ?

Sorry but two or three games aside that 40,000 stuff is bollocks.

Dig out a book and look at our attendances in the top flight, I can remember a few games with barely 15,000 of us there & 20,000 being very good for us & that is well before we started our fall.

Our gates then fell off a cliff, I can recall Championship standard games in crowds of 6000.

It was built back up under the Cooper & Jordan era but dropped again under Osman.

Our support in the last few years has been absolutely amazing, partially because anyone moving here & interested in watching football is only going in one direction.

As time goes by I’m more and more convinced that Nick Higgs is a mastermind genius. When he was in charge, the club had debt he couldn’t afford to repay, the ground was decrepit and the squad was worthless. In other words a club with zero value. Yet, somehow, he managed to find someone to buy the club from him!

Either that or WAQ is a blundering imbecile!

Higgs must have laughed his head off when he saw him coming. What an idiot!

'Geoff, this bloke wants to take over'

'For a wind up, see if he will buy it off you'?

'LOOL, £5M Geoff, what a belter, I would have just given it to him.'

I have no idea if WAQ actually paid for the swamp dwellers or not BTW.

Just like Bury, they will end up being sold for £1.

The Mem will end up being turned into a housing estate and the Sags will have to reform on the downs with their 20-30 faithful and true watching from the pavements.....unless it is raining, then they won't be bothered and just stay in the pub getting hammered, reminiscing about their Tote-End days and telling stories of how they were loved all over the country.

Call me impatient; but how long do I have to wait for this monumentous day?

Wally would probably accept £5m just to get some money back I feel.

But when you need to put in £30m+ for a stadium that isn't even in the planning stage you would question who would want to buy them.

Not even in the planning stage ?? I'll have you know it's due to open in August..that's what Wally told them so it must be true ??
