My mum had a bright green mk2 (I think), and once pulled up to the traffic lights by the fighting cocks (the carehome in Hengrove/Whitchurch now), alongside a brand new transit full of builders. They started giving it "the big one" and started revving the ass off this van. Lights went green and my mum put her foot down - knobheads in the van didn't know what to do with themselves, as they got smaller and smaller in the rear view mirror!!

Not 100% sure what the engine was in it, but all I do know is that every morning when she started the engine, it would set off the car alarm on the sports car that was in the garage next door ^_^ What I do know is that my dad spent many weekends tightening up various bolts in and around the car, including the gear box!!

Back in the 1980s, a neighbour of mine who worked for Vauxhall in Luton used to drive a basic Astra, I stress ‘basic’, as it was not the GTE model, which was a lovely specimen.

Just like your father, he would often be working on his car during weekends, and he took me out for a drink one Sunday morning to a local country pub.

When we were driving back, we had a similar incident when a Mercedes cabriolet pulled up alongside and the young driver and his passengers started taking the proverbial out of what, to be fair, appeared a very basic car in comparison, and of course, the revving of the engine waiting for the lights to change.

Their faces were a picture when they caught up with us at the next lights, and my neighbour told me later that he frequently got spare parts ‘cheaply’ from the factory, hence his weekend car maintenance.

The first car I bought for myself was a Toyota Celica, I wss working in a garage as a paint sprayer at the time and one of the mechanics had tuned it to within an inch of its life and put some superduper gear box in it.

He basically gave it to me to do the bodywork which I never really got around to doing, so the sight of this old rust bucket disappearing of into the distance must have been a bit galling for some. :)

I know this will upset some of the petrol heads, but I get an even better effect from my Corsa e. Apart from a couple of very small 'e' symbols on the back and sides, there is nothing obvious to show it is electric, it doesn't even have the special green number plate, so I have surprised a few boy racers.

The torque is just amazing, my brother in law likened it to a plane starting it's take off when I put it in sport mode. I love how it does it all so effortlessly.

I got done by an ice cream van on the M5 once. To be fair to me, it was nightime and I thought it was an ambulance coming and not a Mr Whippy. He must have been doing 90 though.

Dangerous that. If he crashed it could result in the loss of hundreds and thousands…

Cryptic as always Bert, have they been running an illegal casino?

No, just an illegal circus.

They tried roulette but all ended up as skint as the original supporters club shop after that woman kept sticking her hand in the till.

The problem with the roulette was that they point blank refused to stick any chips on 'Red', so it was black or green only and the banker cleared up!

Oh, and then there's the illegal Santa's Grotto conducted in a condemned Portaloo.

So many gifts!
