My point was that people on here have said we look very good.  I assumed they were not meaning very good compared to last season .

Then my mistake. I read your post as making exactly the opposite point - That when people said 'very good' they must have meant very good compared to last year and you thought that very good compared to last year was not a valuable benchmark given how totally toilet we were.

To be clear - I thought we were very good today. Both compared to last year and also by the general standards of any championship team playing any decent prem team. Not to be too flippant about losing 0-3. But play like that more often than not and we will be in top half not bottom half of championship.

Scoreline harsh but forget that, that was a decent performance which encourages me as we ain't gonna be matching up to Aston Villa's in the Championship every week. We must have used up our penalty allocation already.

There were some good individual performances. Matty James brings us something we've lacked and nice to see our duracell bunny Andi Weimann getting good time. Alex Scott and Sam Bell both gave Matty Cash a torrid time, the former looking a real future star. Palmer may have his work cut out to be the attacking midfielder in the team. Atkinson looks a good addition.

The game only looked lively after Scott came on.

I think he definitely upped the tempo even further. I thought Palmer played well but Scott was better.  It’s going to be hard not to start him and Bell next week.

In comparison to last season...that was 100 times better.

In comparison to where performances need to be for this season...defence need to shape up massively and we need to be more composed with shooting and final ball. It's almost like our players get too excited/scared when they get within 20 yards of the opposition goal and start misplacing passes or dragging shots.

I'm a big fan of Palmer, but I don't think I'd mind if Scott started in that AMC role next week. He looks so composed on the ball, strong at shielding it, decent in the air for flick ons and drove forward when he got the ball.

I actually think we missed Semenyo today as I thought AW and COD were quite poor at finding spaces for KP to find.

It wasn’t a bad performance really but the goals will be as soft as you’ll see. That needs to be cut out asap. Consistently got behind out fullbacks.

Still it was a starting XI that would probably be promoted at our level and we won’t be seeing that next weekend.

Kalas in for Atkinson for me. Williams or Nagy in for King(assuming Massengo not ready). Wells in for Martin or Palmer. Actually thought we tried to play off Martin a bit more today and some flashes. Had bodies near him.

Some very bizarre negative posts on this game. The scoreline definitely flattered them. No issues with their first goal, Bentley flapped at the second but would rather that in preseason and got beat on the break completely against the run of the play for the third which potentially went out before the cross was played.

We showed intent, physicality and wow Alex Scott needs to be playing. Two very strong penalty shouts and VAR would of called atleast one of those. Weird to feel happier with that performance despite the scoreline than any of the preseason games we've won previously or most of last season.

Missed the first half and watched the Villa stream. Commentary was surprisingly good. Things that stood out from them:

  • The first half would have been disappointing for Villa as Bristol City didn't play with any tempo or intensity
  • Nigel Pearson needs to (and must have) given them a talking to at half time
  • Scott has done more in two minutes than we saw all first half
  • If I wasn't so biased, I'd say that was a definite penalty (x2)
  • Great cross… but that ball looked way out
  • Sometimes in pre-season you get a glimpse of someone who's worth keeping an eye on… and Scott has something about him

Bit of a curate’s egg.

Genuinely some encouraging signs. Some good movement and can absolutely see what they are trying to do. With VAR would have been 2-2, as for me two pretty certain penalties and their third was out. Equally clearly they had another gear so probably would have won anyway but the score overall a bit flattering to them. We looked more physical as well in a good way.

Against that looked very one paced until the changes. Even allowing for the ball being out concerning to see at this stage how much space their player gets for the third, so feels the back line still not always sure of their roles. Hopefully Bentley is back to form on seasons kick off.

Not the best way to watch a game, but.

I do worry about our defence. Very soft goals, all be it the cross for the last one clipped the front row of seats in the Atyeo.

The moment , intensity, willingness to find space and just the number of options for the ball carrier is so much better.

We need Wells up top, that and Weimann & COD pulling the defence around could bring the best out of Palmer.

Simpson's cameo today looks to have handed the RB shirt to Vyner.

Scott looks closer to the team that I would have thought.

Nice to see the one thing that doesn't change. The so called bigger team gets the decisions.

All that and I still have no idea how we'll go when the season starts.

Did Bell have 3 attempts on target in his brief period on the pitch? He looked really lively. Of the young players that played last season I thought he looked behind the others both in physicality and confidence, but he looks to have really come on in the pre season.

Agreed.

I was hoping that Conway would do the same as I think he is a top prospect, but it seems he didn't make enough of an impression.

Bell looked very good today against good opposition and did his chances no harm at all.

Decent pre-season game and 3:0 wasn’t a reflection of what I saw.

Their 3rd looked offside & Martin was clearly brought down from where I was sitting.

2nd half was good & we look so much better going into this season.

I would say Vyner is ahead of Simpson & I’d play Scott ahead of Palmer based on today.

Heard a lot of negativity coming out of the gate, which seems misplaced but understandable after the past 24 months.

I thought that was a pretty good performance today , the played looked fit and sharp, some good play, some of the young players came in and made an impact, I expect us to give Blackpool a hard game next week based on that I think we will win,

Have to say i haven't been impressed with Simpson in any of the games.

Seems to lack the pace and slow to move the ball.

Would definitely start Vyner at fullback Saturday.

Famous last words but Vyner must be nailed on for starting RB. Looked good today and must have been working on crossing. Given he is a very decent defender and good footballer, if he decides to focus an RB and we can bear with him through the downtimes, he could mature into a good specialist 2.
