In fairness he's probably the greatest sports person ever

Pele, Ali, Don Bradman, Ronaldo x 2, Federer, Williams sisters, Usain Bolt, Carl Lewis, Shane Warne, Michael Jordan, Tom Brady, Maradona, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus.

Is he better than all of them?

I think others may dispute that. Football yes , but over Muhammad Ali for example?

I mean a lot of this is based on the fact I think he's the greatest footballer of all time. But yes I think he is therefore the greatest sports person of all time. When you consider the amount of people that play football in comparison to other sports be it boxing, rugby, swimming etc as well as the investment into football which makes standing out more difficult he is outrageously good. Without doubt the greatest footballer of all time because he's the most complete player and has won so much individually and with his team. To be the best footballer on the planet for so long when football is the most played sport in the world with such vast investment is much more difficult than being a stand out boxer, rugby player, swimmer etc.

Comparing Barca to Bayern in terms of finance is like comparing a smackhead to Martin Lewis

Clearly the two are very different financially let's say. Point being, Bayern on pitch performance got knocked down a bit in order to pay down the ground costs more quickly.

Barcelona would be well advised perhaps to take a leaf out of their book, to shift priorities for a few years and then go again big a few years on, but in a more responsible targeted way.

Couple of lines, apologies if already covered.

Real Madrid in particular seem to oppose this CVC deal. Possible Barcelona and Atletico do as well.

Messi.

I've not really looked into it in as much depth as other financial Regulations but assuming Revenue bounces back to decent levels, Barcelona left to own devices possibly could afford it. Wage cap was reduced and reduced again during Covid, hard to know exactly how it works but La Liga themselves seem to set various parameters in terms of total wage budget.

This is a rehash of a report in La Marca, a Spanish paper that has a Real Madrid bias. Let's wait and see.

It’s on Barca’s official page.

It is still just possible it is a power play by Barca to their league saying ‘you make us play by these rules this is what will happen’, but it is official by the club.

Still as you say a wait and see I think.

Fancy signing Grealish for £100m and it’s not the top football story for more than 30 minutes.

Fancy Kane might also be back at training soon…

Think it could be a ploy by Barca, we will see.

Sky reporting that Barca and RM,s cash problems are down to La Liga rules and Covid are nonsense.

Both in massive debt and chasing the EPL clubs with their huge TV revenues are their key problems.

Why did the Super League become a possibility? Because of the above reasons, not Covid.

Harry Kane wants a move and there is nothing, zero, nada about a move to Spain, simple reason neither could afford the wages he is currently on never mind an increase AND a huge fee.

Both of them are in trouble financially and that is not going to be resolved easily.

Agree on all points. As an aside my comment about Kane was more to do if Man City fancied Messi over him. It’s possibly only them and PSG (maybe Chelsea?) that could afford Messi.

I suspect wages are not that big a motivation to this bloke. Money is almost now an irrelevance.

He wants a club that can have a very reasonable shout at the Champions League. This leaves about eight possible destinations outside of Spain, four of them in England.

Not so sure, jury more out for me about Real Madrid finances being screwed, Barcelona however seem in a right hole.

It, as for all clubs too though, doesn't factor in a potential significant possible rapid bounce back in revenue streams post Covid- whether that happens is anyone's guess but if it did, the equation can change again.

Debt, there are a number of clubs across Europe with significant debt piles, some here in fact.

Another important factor is the debt profile. Barcelona had a hefty proportion of short term debt, not saying that their position was a positive one but Covid in that scenario is disastrous.

Real Madrid otoh had a significant pile of equity, more of a cushion as well as debt spread over longer.

Swiss Ramble has done a lot of good stuff on this ie debt in European football, will try and find some of the Threads again soon.

No chance he’d ever come to the prem , if he ended up not having a great season it would cloud his career

Saw a stat on biggest transfer fees earlier. Coutinho and Dembele cost Barca £281 million. Madness.

It's insane. And it's come back to bite them. 10 years ago, the squad was mostly academy players with the occasional large purchase, ie David villa and Dani Alves, who both excelled for the club.

Even accommodating for inflation, those purchases of Coutinho and Dembele are through the stratosphere without much of a return. Then add on De Jong which was around £70 million, Griezmann £120 million (contention over the actual amount). Eventually these huge numbers on their own accumulate to something unmanageable, plus gigantic wages on top.

PSG although apparently they are favourites to sign Messi.

Messi to PSG to free Mbappe to go to Real Madrid. Suits all parties, Real Madrid get their man this season, PSG dont lose Mbappe on a free who only has one year left on his contract.
