4 bigs lads as the back four

I remember we had a great run of results and played some good football for a rare interlude when there were four at the back under LJ with Magnússon, Flint, Baker and Wright.  It looks defensive on paper but gives height, in the team and protection from set pieces  Perhaps the players in front feel more confident to push forward knowing the defensive strength at the back.

Very true- all the injuries forced his hand and we stumbled across a strong setup.

It also helped to fill the centre of the pitch, which is often where a game can be won and lost these days...Wright- RB nominally but can tuck in, Magnússon that bit more versatile can do either LB or narrower, also quite easy to fall into a back 3...with Brownhill wide right and Bryan wide left, Paterson central behind Reid- the latter a midfielder by trade up front so 2 for the price of 1, we could get that control but more importantly that stability quite nicely- it was one of those shapes whereby if you change one component part though- ie one of the wide players for a 'traditional' winger, one of the CBs in wide areas for a traditional FB, especially Wright for Hunt- Pisano could tuck in a bit more, but especially Diedhiou for Reid, then the whole shape starts to fall away. One of those that needed very specific types of player IMO.
