Possibly been mentioned on here somewhere but I haven't noticed it anywhere. It looks as though the poor guy has been dealt another knee injury, really hope it's not too serious & he recovers ok.

From the time given that he's expected to be back I'm guessing/hoping  it's not too serious, he deserves better luck imo.

That was many peoples main concern when talking about the possibility of signing him permanently after his loan spell.

Hopefully for his sake, like you say, it's not a long term injury and he will be back soon.

You have to assume that the main reason  nobody has taken him off of Stokes hands permanently (other than big wages) is due to the concerns over his knees.

Time to accept playing at a League 1/ 2 level like Maynard has been doing successfully for the last few seasons.

His body cant seem to handle Championship intensity anymore.

He can still score goals this level, Maynard couldn't. Big difference.

Or possibly retire so he doesn't end up in a wheelchair by the time he's 50.  His knees must be absolutely shot to pieces.

I disagree. There is not really a debate that a higher level of fitness is required to compete in the championship. Even Wayne Rooney couldn't shine at Derby he was 32.

We all remember how good Maynard was at this level and by the time he was 28 he was done. But can still bag 20 goals in League 2? So ...

Aren't you talking about two separate things here though?

There's overall fitness and stamina on the one hand and there's having a part of your body with an existing weakness which could break/get damaged at any given time. The two do interconnect in some ways but you can have a low/declining level of fitness and stamina without having any weaknesses or tendency to injury or you can be incredibly fit in terms of stamina and intensity but have a particular area of your body which is susceptible to serious damage.

Even in your examples you use

1) Wayne Rooney who had few serious injuries but whose fitness levels dropped to a point where his stamina was not where it was a few years earlier.

2) Nicky Maynard who had serious injuries and ultimately that impacted on his fitness levels - not to the point where it was causing serious injuries but simply that he did not have the same levels of stamina

as an argument that Afobe should drop down a division but Afobe's problem has never been a lack of stamina or being unable to cope with intensity but that he has a dodgy knee that keeps getting injuries. Even if he dropped down to League One or League Two, that wouldn't resolve having a dodgy knee.
