Peterborough United away match day thread

A game in Cambridgeshire against Peterborough United is not a trip we’ve made for a while. Our last visit being a league one encounter, back in November 2014, a game we won 3-0 with two goals from Freeman and one from Wilbraham. Our head-to-head record is good, we’ve won 27, lost 14 and drawn 6.

There will be a decent following today of circa 1100 (from an allocation just shy of 1500 tickets), there is no pay on the day option. For those making the 170 odd mile each way trip, be loud and proud, here’s a guide to their stadium: https://www.theposh.com/club/the-weston-homes-stadium/ Given it’s a stadium we are less familiar with here’s more about it should you be interested: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London_Road_Stadium

As it is a less well known haunt here’s a bit more than usual about options pre/post the game!

The best cider pub is allegedly the Frothblowers which is a microbrewery. https://www.visitpeterborough.com/food-and-drink/the-frothblowers-p1473461which. This link shows pubs that welcome away fans: https://www.awaygames.co.uk/away-pubs/peterborough-united-away/ The Palmerston Arms sounds pretty decent: https://www.bateman.co.uk/locations/palmerston-arms/ in the city Centre there’s the aptly named Ostrich: https://www.ostrichinnpeterborough.com/ and nearby to the Ostrich, if you fancy a good selection of real ale and Thai food, there’s the Brewery Tap (near the train station) which certainly sounds worth a visit: https://thegoodpubguide.co.uk/pub/116403/pe1+2aa/brewery+tap/ however if you want a wider choice of pubs take a look here: https://www.drinkinthesights.com/best-pubs-peterborough.html If you are looking for a reasonable Indian here’s a few to look at: https://threebestrated.co.uk/indian-restaurants-in-peterborough and https://thegurkhalounge.com

They secured the point needed for promotion last season by coming back from three down at home to Lincoln. https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11764/12291137/peterborough-3-3-lincoln-posh-promoted-to-championship-after-dramatic-draw

Posh are finding life at this level tough their recent form is LLLLWLD = 4 points from a potential 21 with 6 goals for and 14 against. On Wednesday evening they drew 0-0 at home to unbeaten AFC Bournemouth, when like us (against Millwall) Posh managed just one shot on target!

They are managed by Darren Ferguson who replaced Steve Evans, Ferguson has had two previous spells as Posh boss between 2007-09 and 2011-2015. In his pre-match piece (https://www.theposh.com/news/2021/october/video--ferguson-ahead-of-bristol-city-game/) he talked up their home form, they’ve only lost once at home and that was against WBA, who scored the only goal of the game in the 94th minute. Their co-owner and chairman Darragh MacAnthony is a colourful character who often lets others know what he thinks!

Sammie Szmodics, who has not started any of Posh’s last four matches and was on the bench in the week coming on after 67 minutes, joined them from us and it will be interesting to see how he performs today.

The Posh are well known for signing lower league gems for a bargain price and have made tidy returns on a few players, with Ivan Toney, who they got from his hometown club Northampton, probably the best example, rumour suggests they paid around £650k for him and with add-ons recouped around £10m when he went to Brentford!

Skipper Mark Beevers (hamstring), Jack Marriott (hamstring), Joel Randall (thigh) and Ricky-Jade Jones (knee) are all ruled out and Marriott and Randall are both likely to be long-term absentees. Former Gas frontman Jonson Clarke-Harris was not expected to feature having been banned for four games over historic social media posts featuring homophobic comments, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58670510 however, he has lodged an appeal and is available for selection until a decision is made on the appeal.

As for us with NP still recovering from Covid CF will again be at the helm. We will need to see if Baker and Dasilva, the main casualties from Wednesday, are declared fit, suspect it’s unlikely, also holding out that Wells’ groin issue and Williams’ cramps from the midweek do not keep them out. This one may be too soon for Antoine Semenyo or Han-Noah Massengo.

Peterborough potpourri

  • They are nicknamed "The Posh" after Pat Tirrell, manager of Fletton United, was reported to say he was "Looking for posh players for a posh new team."
  • Victoria Beckham filed a claim to the UK Patent Office over Peterborough’s nickname claiming the word ‘posh’ was synonymous with her worldwide image.
  • Peterborough United officially came into being in1934 when a crowded meeting at the city's now long demolished Angel Hotel decided to go ahead with the formation of a professional club to fill a void left by the collapse of Peterborough and Fletton United some two years earlier. Local councillor Jack Swain, appointed acting chairman, told the gathering: 'I think that with the revival of old enthusiasm in the city, Peterborough will ultimately find a place in the Football League.' It took almost 40 years for that dream to come to fruition in 1960.
  • In May 2018, Weston Homes signed a five-year deal to sponsor the London Road Terrace - it became known as the Weston Homes London Road Terrace. Then in June 2019, the ABAX Stadium became The Weston Homes Stadium in a ten-year deal.
  • Mike Tyson is a Peterborough supporter!
  • In 2008 this was announced over their PA system ‘Would a Mr Pete Borough please go home or contact home immediately’
  • Gary Johnson was appointed their manager on a two-year contract on 6 April 2010, however, Johnson left Peterborough less than a year later on 10 January 2011.

The International break will feel much better if we play well and leave with three points, to the traveling fans have a great day, make lots of noise and get right behind the team, COYR.

Win, loose or draw, we are then faced with the three most depressing words in the English language "the International break".

Hopefully a chance for Nigel and the injured players to be ready to resume when we return to action.

For once, we can do with it IMO. Nigel, HNM, Jay, Bakes and one or two others could do with a bit of recovery time. Also, we`re not really losing anyone bar presumably Kalas to their national  full sides.

Setting off for this one in a minute. First away league game for me and the boy. Picking a couple of stragglers up from temple meads then off we go. COYR

Have a great day out red army. I always remember when my dad took me to away ones in the 70s and 80s, oxford, west brom, west ham, spurs, for me they are great memories.

Keep safe and all the best

Not going to today’s game, but I’ve been there a couple of times, most memorably a game on Valentine’s Day when I think Tommy Doc scored the winner. I always used to like their ground, the away terrace had a cavernous roof.

I’ve got no idea how we’ll get on today. The fact it’s one of those theoretically “winnable” games makes me nervous.

A rare game where I can sit at home and leave a fair bit later. Sadly the weather is meant to be breezy with heavy rain throughout, so I suspect the % play will be smack  it in the air and fight for it in the opposing box. Ho hum. My confidence level will be defined at 2pm when I see what midfield we can put out. If no one is back not feeling confident, but hey ho, it’s a day out and you never know.
