No it isn't.

It's to appease OFCOM.

 

Much as the apologising for swearing when broadcasting football annoys me too, it is purely to prevent the broadcaster getting in trouble with OFCOM because bad language before the watershed breaches guidelines, always has been.

you're right - it always has been but it's high time things changed.   It's such an out of date response - kind of Victorian.   Kids go to every football match and hear all kinds of bad language.   The idea that anyone could be seriously offended by hearing the odd swear word in the background when watching football on TV is ridiculous.
