Enclosure Old Timer
Middlesbrough, around 1968,the one coach left A.G.at 4.30 am (very little motorway then),got to about 30 miles from 'boro in pouring rain and heard on coach radio that the match was off. Went into Middlesbrough ,had a drink and a bite to eat then set off for home, arriving at some time past midnight, nightmare!
samo II
Losing 6-0 away to Ipswich in the playoff season. I was attending with a friend who is an Ipswich fan; I was in the away end, he was in the home end with his pals and family. We were absolutely destroyed and 90% of the away end had left well before the end; I didn’t have that option as was staying with him, so was pretty much the last one out, and had to take dog’s abuse the rest of the weekend. Ended up in the playoff final that season so wasn’t too bad in hindsight, but a miserable trip otherwise.

TomThumb84
1988 Play-off final replay v Walsall, Fellows Park. In the first leg we managed to lose 1-3 at the Gate, after being 1-0 up with 28 mins left infront of 25,000, and then won 2-0 at Walsall to haul us level in the tie, after which we conspired to lose a pen shoot out for home advantage in the final replay. 19 mins into said replay - Walsall 3-0 Bristol City. A 270 minute slow death with City typically keeping us interested but then imploding. Almost a perfect set of matches to sum us up over the last 35 years. David Kelly 5 goals across the 3 games. First time I was old enough to experience genuine heartbreak as a City fan. Edited October 14, 2021 by TomThumb84

Dredd
I remember getting beat 4-1 away at Bradford under Tinnion I think. Awful place. Miles away. Terrible performance and the coach broke down on the way home. Millwall in the GJ play off era. Coach got lost in London, turned up at half time and we lost 1-0. Honourable mention to that JPT defeat away at Rovers. Only made minimally more bearable by seeing some gobby **** giving it large in front of the City fans get launched about 10 feet into the air by a police horse. Thinking about it, he may have grown up and become the famous horse puncher.

Coldest I've ever been was at Doncaster's old ground, it was a midweek game in December (2004ish) and the away end was an open terrace. It was that cold that you could literally see the frost forming on the edges of the pitch during the second half.

Even after Carey was sent off we were in the game, it just seemed that every chance Ipswich had went in. Also was surprised how many stayed till the end - I was with City fans in a corner of one of the side stans so don't know if others were behind the goal

Mr Popodopolous
Wasn't exactly the worst as such, but a costly one would have been Lee Miller hitting the post late on at Swindon in 2004. That cost us promotion- as someone I was watching it with said to me at the time, and I said "Nah- plenty of games to redeem the situation..." Well we drew 1-1 and promotion missed by one point! Then we all know what happened at the Millennium so yes it did.
The Constant Rabbit
You lot are easily upset West Ham away Tues night lost 5-0 spent the whole game dodging bags of piss and waves of darts. 1 coach went - followed back to it by 500 skinheads. Even the coppers told us to leg it, as they would be. Having to share the bogs and tea stand with West Ham outside the away area during the game was an extra-special treat. Utterly terrified throughout. Wrexham away Tuesday night lost 1-0 and stood in a deluge for 90 mins in sub-zero temps. Coppers wouldn't let us sit in the stands. A certain author and 'The Knife' stole the match ball and ensured North Wales finest held the coach back and slapped everyone silly until it was 'found'. Home at 5am still wet, fed up and due at work at 8. Those were shit away games! Honourable mention to Grimsby away for being dropped off in an abandoned fairground miles from the ground at 10am for a 3pm kick off and trying to dodge the local thugs to find a pub to hole up in until we could get an escort to the ground, as basically no-one knew where it was. Grimsby also smells extremely bad

Red-Robbo
On a personal level, I've never been colder than while watching us at the Britannia Stadium (as it then was), and never been damper than when watching us at Saltergate. Swede
Wolves away with John DeWolfe playing for them. Late getting into the ground due to a combination of blisters from new shoes and police diversions around the ground, already conceded by the time I got in. Completely outplayed, lost all sense of direction outside the ground due to segregation so as a consequence lost where I parked the car, by this time limping badly after several hours of trudging around the streets to eventually find the place where I'd parked just before they padlocked the car park shut. I cheerily greeted the bemused attendant on the way out with "my team lost, I've got blisters but I've found my car!" He must've thought they're a strange lot from Bristol! 1stCityExile
City away to Cardiff (the old Ninian Park) for a play off semi final. I forget the year but this was probably about 10-15 years ago. Impossible to get an away ticket, but a City supporting mate of mine, who lived in Wales, was registered on the Cardiff City database (don't ask, no idea). So anyway, we get tickets in the home end - the old open end, concrete strip down the side of the pitch, where all their ultras used to assemble (terrible choice, but we lacked familiarity with the ground). Apart from the fact that we lost 1-0, we got soaking wet from the atrocious weather, we also felt obliged to clap their goal for fear of being "outed" as "foreign agents" by some of the less than friendly meatheads around us. Not a great day.

After getting back into it by winning that second leg 2-0, Ralph Milne missed a damn sitter right near the end! That goal would put us into division 2 right then and there. To cap it off, we lost the replay 4-0 (not 3-0), or so I recall. But I agree, if there was any set of games that sums us up over the last 30 years, it was the play-offs of '88. Colin Gordon secured our spot with a very late winner on the last game of the season, filling us all with hope. We beat Sheff Utd 1-0 in first leg of the semis and take a slender lead to Brammall Lane. We almost screw it up, but there was Carl Shutt in the dying minutes to equalize with a stooping header. Scenes! And we're filled with hope again... Cue David Kelly. The end. 1

BS15_RED
Oldham, 2005-06, stopped in Walsall for some lunch, 5 minutes up onto the M6 was the start of the worst traffic jam I’ve ever come across, crawled all the way up to Manchester, missed the start of the game and got in to find us 2-0 down. We then promptly had a goal disallowed and ended up losing 4-3. One of those days when you really shouldn’t of bothered.
