Worst away games

Chesterfield on a midweek evening in GJs early days where we were on that losing run, lost 3-0 in the rain.

A 2-0 defeat at Blackburn in the Cup under McInnes, who was sacked a week later. Grim weather, grim performance. It took us until about 10 minutes from the end to register a shot on target, which brought scenes of wild celebration from the away end. At full time the fans properly turned on the players, which led to Cole Skuse coming over to try and placate/apologise, to litle effect.

A 1-0 defeat at Crewe under SO'D. An awful game between 2 awful teams settled by an injury time penalty for them. My particular memory is JET barely breaking a sweat to try and do anything, to the point where the decision to sub him midway through the 2nd half was met with rapturous applause.

Losing 6-0 away to Ipswich in the playoff season.

I was attending with a friend who is an Ipswich fan; I was in the away end, he was in the home end with his pals and family.

We were absolutely destroyed and 90% of the away end had left well before the end; I didn’t have that option as was staying with him, so was pretty much the last one out, and had to take dog’s abuse the rest of the weekend.

Ended up in the playoff final that season so wasn’t too bad in hindsight, but a miserable trip otherwise.

Yeah, I hated that game too. We were pipped to the league title by Watford that day. Preston got their winner right after we had equalised (Sean McCarthy, who celebrated with an unlikely somersault) and many of our fans were still celebrating our goal. It was all ticket for away fans (we sold out, about 3,000 made the trip) and I’d got to AG really early on the morning they went on general sale to get mine. My dad couldn’t get a ticket so ended up going in the home end with many other City fans, and he said the Preston fans were very friendly.

Remeber that one, we were in that god awful semi condemned stand on one side.  Seemed like forever travelling up on CATS.  2-1 down inside about 10 minutes and not sure we mustered another chance after.  Our season really did fall apart when Goater left, otherwise we'd have cruised to the title.

That was as grim as anything for a decade or so.

Tranmere - conceding 6 on a Friday night 89/90 wasn’t fun.

Funny that Tranmere game,it turned into one of the best nights ever, went in to Liverpool after the game, didn’t hardly buy a drink all night, the locals seemed to take to us,they obviously felt our pain, and were determined to help us drown our sorrows.Which we did with aplomb,I don’t know why but I kept checking if my wallet was still in my pocket,I mean the locals were great, but I couldn’t bring myself to fully trust those scallies.

1988 Play-off final replay v Walsall, Fellows Park.

In the first leg we managed to lose 1-3 at the Gate, after being 1-0 up with 28 mins left infront of 25,000, and then won 2-0 at Walsall to haul us level in the tie, after which we conspired to lose a pen shoot out for home advantage in the final replay.

19 mins into said replay - Walsall 3-0 Bristol City.

A 270 minute slow death with City typically keeping us interested but then imploding. Almost a perfect set of matches to sum us up over the last 35 years.

David Kelly 5 goals across the 3 games.

First time I was old enough to experience genuine heartbreak as a City fan.

I remember getting beat 4-1 away at Bradford under Tinnion I think. Awful place. Miles away. Terrible performance and the coach broke down on the way home.

Millwall in the GJ play off era. Coach got lost in London, turned up at half time and we lost 1-0.

Honourable mention to that JPT defeat away at Rovers. Only made minimally more bearable by seeing some gobby **** giving it large in front of the City fans get launched about 10 feet into the air by a police horse. Thinking about it, he may have grown up and become the famous horse puncher.

Coldest I've ever been was at Doncaster's old ground, it was a midweek game in December (2004ish) and the away end was an open terrace. It was that cold that you could literally see the frost forming on the edges of the pitch during the second half.

Disagree with "absolutely destroyed".

It was a slightly surreal game. Even after Carey was sent off we were  in the game, it  just seemed that every chance Ipswich had went in.

Also was surprised how many stayed till the end - I was with City fans in a corner of one of the side stans so don't know if others were  behind the goal
