Popular Post Jerseybean
Good day fellow Reds Wishing NP a full and speedy recovery, he will not be traveling to the Coventry Building Society Arena due to feeling unwell. Assistant Manager Curtis Fleming will take charge of the team today. After this game it’s the final International break of the year, let’s hope we can put in a decent performance, which given that our last two games in this neck of the woods have finished with 3-0 defeats might be a big ask! Who else was one of the 36,892 (15,000 City fans) at Highfield Road on 19 May 1977? What a night that was! For the young ‘ uns here is a bit about an amazing game in our history: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coventry_City_2–2_Bristol_City_(1977) https://www.ccfc.co.uk/news/2020/may/great-escapes-bristol-city-1977/ https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/day-bristol-city-game-led-66455 http://jimmysirrelslovechild.co.uk/fans/coventry-1977 On 9th June 2020 Coventry City were confirmed as League One Champions, after the season was concluded early due to Coronavirus the final league positions were based on 'Points Per Game' and the Sky Blues were clear winners in unprecedented times. They finished 16th last season and so far this campaign are one of the surprise teams in the Championship, currently sitting in fourth position on 27 points. Mark Robins took charge for a second time in 2017. Pre-match he had this to say: ‘It’s a big club Bristol City, it’ll be a great atmosphere and what’s not to look forward to. He believes we have a good group of Championship experience and identified the forward line as one that his team will need to be wary of. ‘They’ve got good players throughout the team, I had Nakhi Wells before, and I know he is a good player, a brilliant finisher, and Chris Martin who plays up front for them and Andi Weimann and they’ve got some really good players.’ Last season we lost 3-1 away and beat them 2-1 at home. Our last away win against the Sky Blues was October 2014. Links with us include, Bobby Gould (who played 35 times for us in 1972/73 scoring 15 goals), John Sillett (our youth coach in 1968 under manager Alan Dicks), Mark Robins, who had a loan spell with us in 2003 as well as often being linked with managing us and more recently Liam Walsh (loan at Coventry) and Matty James (loan spell at Coventry 2021.) Their top scorer is Viktor Gyokeres with nine, Matt Godden was charged for diving last month, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58809997 which got him a two match ban, but he’s back now. They will be without Martyn Waghorn who has a shoulder injury. On Tuesday evening, when we were very poor down the road at St Andrew’s, they hosted Swansea a game that they lost 1-2 which ended Coventry City's unbeaten home record in the Championship. After our midweek performance NP noted that it may be a “very different team” at Coventry. Which probably translates as an opportunity for several of the younger squad players, who were on the bench on Tuesday. Baker, King and Semenyo are all out and I’d be surprised if James or Williams feature, so it might well be quite an inexperienced team. Today City will be backed by just shy of 3,000 fans at the Coventry Building Society Arena, which given recent performances is nothing short of bloody brilliant support. Take a bow each and everyone one of you! Supporting a team when they are winning and playing well is very easy and a joy, supporting us at the moment is often joyless and not so easy, but we are critically important so let’s continue to positively show our support. Their only period in the top division lasted 34 consecutive years between 1967 and 2001, and they were inaugural members of the Premier League in 1992. They won the FA Cup in 1987, the club's only major trophy, when they beat Spurs 3–2. In 2005 Coventry relocated to the 32,609 seater Ricoh Stadium after 106 years at Highfield Road. In May 2021 it was announced that the Ricoh Arena would be renamed when it became the Coventry Building Society Arena. On 23 March 2013, Coventry City moved all its staff and club shop stock from the venue after a long dispute over rent and access to match-day revenue with the club. They ground-shared at Sixfields Stadium from 2013–2014 (ground-sharing with Northampton Town) in their first game there in August 2013 Coventry scored a late winner to edge a nine-goal thriller against us in their first "home" game at Northampton's Sixfields. They then moved to St Andrew's between 2019–2021 (ground-sharing with Birmingham City). Coventry won the title of the UK City of culture for 2021. The first smokeless zone in Britain was introduced in Coventry in 1948 and the city is also the birthplace of the Green Party in this country, originally called the People Party. Did Lady Godiva really ride her horse through the streets of Coventry naked in protest against high taxes? Many historians say it is a myth, but even if it is, Lady Godiva was very real. An 11th century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman, she was known for her generous nature and along with her husband, Earl Leofric, she founded a Benedictine monastery in Coventry. The car chase scene in the Italian Job, (1960s film) with those cool looking minis zooming through huge sewer pipes was actually filmed in Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry. Two-Tone music, British Ska, came out of Coventry in the late 1970s, through bands like The Specials and Selecter. Ghost Town, the Specials’ biggest hit, was actually written about Glasgow, not Coventry. Finally, the phrase, ‘sent to Coventry’ has its origins in the 17th Century English Civil War, Coventry was a strong Parliament town and if Royalist soldiers were stationed in or near Coventry they were treated like social outcasts, ignored and excluded in places such as taverns. Just like we did back in 1977 on that memorable and remarkable night - always believe, COYR. 15 5 4 Quote Link to comment
Major Isewater
Robins has done a fantastic job at Coventry. Firstly getting them promoted with all the disruption behind the scenes, then They more than held their own in their first season back in this division with very little resources and this year are surprising many. All this is a bit annoying for those of us who have wanted the bloke here on several occasions only to be shot down with the lazy accusations of ‘ lower league manager ‘ or ‘ jobs for the boys ‘ etc. As for today , We started the season like we meant business. The City of old looked to have been swept away by the Pearson revolution but , alas, we seem to have reverted to type. It is so damned frustrating. After last season’s injury debacle ,now even the Boss, is unavailable ! Get well soon Nige. We need to get behind the team , the small margins count in this competitive division and moaning and booing will only help the opposition and accelerate our demise. We are a mix of Dad’s army and junior school first elevens who desperately need our energy and confidence. 3000 is excellent make your voices heard and carry the boys home with the three points. Redtrojan
Crikey we are 5-1 for the win. You’d think we were playing Chelsea or are we really that bad at the moment. Got to stick a tenner on,probably won’t see it again though. Quote Link to comment

Offside
I’m feeling very pessimistic about this game. We have been so lightweight and lacking in shape, and with Williams and presumably James out injured we’re looking threadbare. I really hope the players prove me wrong show some grit in adversity. And wouldn’t it be good to see some organisation to our play. Quote Link to comment
Waffleflap
Hopefully with a big following behind us, it can inspire us to do bits. Prediction 3-0 Coventry  Quote Link to comment

Wanderingred
I really wish we weren’t playing. I know it’s going to ruin my Saturday and I hate that I care so much. Quote Link to comment
Davefevs
Another team playing 3 at the back. Maatsen at LWB is very promising, and Gyokeres is having a fine scoring season. Godden has shown you can step up to this level late in your career and I think he’s quite a clever forward (don’t dangle a leg in). McFadzean continues to prove me wrong at this level, please let today be the day he gets found out. On accumulation he is due a red card today versus us, he’s got away with murder against us over the years. A chance to wind Hamer up too? They play good football though, O’Hare difficult to pick up, and he may hold the key in terms of stop him and we stop a lot of their creativity. Perhaps stopping Hamer’s clever balls into him. I’m not not thinking negatively today, think we can get something. But let’s let them know we are gonna make it hard for them too. Quote Link to comment

There will be a few punters on City today, those that like their stats. City's record away at Coventry over the last few visits is very good. 1 Quote Link to comment
Roadrunner
When a player makes a mistake, remember every player in every team makes a mistake. Indeed do you ever make a mistake? Remember when one of our players misses a tackle or goal, then remember all players from every team does the same. When you played football did you ever miss a tackle or goal?. Lets not make negative comments every time one of our players does something not to your liking. Remember its a TEAM game. Lets all get behind the team. We will not win every match. No team wins every match. I was expecting a up and down season, which should leave us around mid table. Then next season i would hope for an improvement on that. In Nigel i trust, COYRs. 9 4 Quote Link to comment

ralphindevon
The May ‘77 game, along with the first game of that season, away at Arsenal are 2 games I wish I’d been at. I was a young teenager that lived on Exmoor with parents who didn’t like football, so I was never going to get there but did listen on the radio. I have been to Coventry since and we’ve won on both occasions, so definitely one of the better hunting grounds for us. COYR Quote Link to comment
The Dolman Pragmatist
No one has mentioned that match at Coventry in ?2012 when we came back from 3-0 down to 3-3, then 4-4, only to lose 5-4! Baldock and Marvin Elliott scored I think… 1 Quote Link to comment
cityloyal473
4-1 Coventry with us scoring our only goal first and early. Then collectively shitting our pants we’re winning and folding like a 99p ironing board. Edited November 6, 2021 by cityloyal473 Quote Link to comment

Both teams were very good going forward (I think they had a very useful Callum Wilson - whatever happened to him! And we had Sam Baldock) but both not as good at defending that day. Remember seeing all the Cov fans demonstrating against the owners on the road overlooking the ground. 1 Quote Link to comment

pl00peh91
Looks like we’ve gone for a flat 442 with Scott and COD on the wings. Bit nervous in CM with Bakinson / Massengo but there aren’t many other options. Feels like a bit of a waste to play Scott but not start with Wells and Weimann to be honest.
