Random question is it a real thing or just something mentioned in films etc?

If it is real how do you access it?

What is exactly on there?

I found it - so yep it’s a real thing alright.

I’m aware that cyber police track the dark web and track anyone who accesses it and was to scared to enter it.

From what I’ve heard around the camp fire - it really is dark site with gross porn of children and such like.

That's not really true. The dark web isn't a single thing, it's just a different part of the internet that's harder to get into and easier to be anonymous on.

What are you looking for on it anyway? Angela Raynor porn? Your secret ****?

Very very odd as usual.

A bit like Phantom, I was curious as to discover what the Dark Web was all about. I’d heard from around the campfire various descriptions ‘stories’ about it so decided to investigate for myself.

I've had to use it at work.

It is by far and away the most bizarre thing i have ever seen.

You can literally buy anything, and i mean anything on it. From Drugs to guns(machine guns, grenades etc), to child pornography. All paid for in crytocurrency( so untracable) and delivered to you door.

It's a whole different side to the world that most people knew existed.

It is the modern day matrix.

If you wsnt to kmow more without getting your hands dirty, this is a good book. I listened  to the audio version a couple of years back.

https://www.wob.com/en-gb/books/jamie-bartlett/dark-net/9780099592020?gclid=Cj0KCQiAkNiMBhCxARIsAIDDKNW99pI4pQSmkShXQumenYD_HMWivcc2g0XY7x1vkZIVoT2M_6jDdB8aAj2UEALw_wcB

There is a special web browser (Tor) that gets you access apparently. It sounds a dangerous place, but like everything else there is also positive reasons for using it. For example, if you feel that the fact you can search for something on Google and then be inundated with adverts for that product on other websites after, is worrying, then the Dark Web might be for you. :)

The one and only time I've ever heard of it was on Elementary as Sherlock says he finds things and tried to track people down on there in a load of episodes. Never thought that it was a real thing as they were describing.

I would.

If you were ever in any trouble, and your laptop/computer was seized; it would be a big red flag that you have TOR/Proxy servers  downloaded on it.

Plus it's fair to say, you never quite know who you are dealing with on there; and who maybe monitoring you.

Kendal Covid conspiracy brothers jailed for buying pistol - BBC News is a good recent example.

Thank You for your interesting post.

Whilst I do not envisage being in any 'trouble' that might warrant my computer being seized, I was intrigued by your comments concerning proxy servers, particularly TOR.

For several years I used HOLA to gain access to mainly UK sites with restricted overseas access, e.g. BBC and SKY Sports, but have recently found it to be quite poor so removed it and have been looking to change my VPN, and TOR is one I have considered.

Are you suggesting I should steer clear?

I would say that the "Deep Web" is one of those things with a far cooler name than it deserves.

Essentially it's anything accessed via the internet but not available to most people through security protocols.

Or what you sign into when you work from home.

Accounts and company intranets.

Going back to the OP I thought the definition of an internet site being Dark Web is that it is blocking search engines so that you can only find it if you already know its URL which you find out from discussion boards or social media messaging.

Now if you run a model railway enthusiast site then you would have no reason to block search engines.

Yet if you are selling illegal drugs then you absolutely would.

Hence the Dark Web generally comprising "dodgy" sites as if your site isn't dodgy then why would you bother to hide it from search engines?

It is however no more of a unity or community than is the open internet; there isn't a Dark Web club.

My friend told me there is lots of stuff on line if you know where to look. He always seems to have the low down on stuff like this, I don't think he's into anything dodgy but might know some people who are more inclined…

The only thing I ever looked at was an anorexia site, I'd heard lots about them so was curious. I lasted about 10 seconds…it was hideous. There's some anorexia channels on You tube too. I did report it to YouTube but I didn't hear anything back.

I'd have thought the only people who would NEED to log onto the DAAAAARK WEB!!!!  would be the police or well,

criminals of some description.  I thought exactly the same as you, when I read that.

Although I'm sure Pete Townsend has a way of getting on there for his "research" projects.

Was on Silk Road quite a few years ago only had the bottle to stay on for less than 5 minutes but let’s just say you could order a hitman (contract killer) as easy as you can groceries on the normal web .

Not sure how legitimate the hitmen on the site were but have read plenty of articles about murder cases involving killers off the dark web .
