I was in the city for the first couple of Premier League derby games between the two of them, including when "Britain's youngest ever convicted football hooligan" a 10 year old Skate threw a brick at police who were escorting the more-successful Saints fans back to civilization.

Corrected that for you

May be many pissed off at that point if it happened but I just don't see City fans abandoning the team after 20 minutes.

Blackpool Saturday 13th April 2002. IIRC we were 4-0 down after half and hour. Plenty of City fans abandoning the play off dream that day

Dont forget many were upset about Rafa's appointment after his time at Liverpool.

It might be different if we appointed Holloway

I’d actually dispute this, having lived in Liverpool for a few years. Won’t go into your ‘anger and bitterness’ comment re Scousers in general but safe to say I disagree.

On the footballing front, in the city Everton and Liverpool are equals. And there’s a lot of respect between the two sets of fans and the clubs in general - a lot due to Hillsbrough. Yeah, they’re rivals. And yeah, I’m sure there’s some idiots. But because allegiances go across families and friends, in general it’s quite a friendly rivalry.

You wouldn’t find many who attest to genuinely hating the other side in the way that some on here feel about Rovers.

It's not about that, it's nothing to do with fighting, or idiots, it's nothing to do with Hillsbrough and the togetherness from that, it's about being usurped on the field and no longer being what your club used to be, and not being able to let go of the idea that Everton are best, nothing but the best, and not being able or prepared to see their club for what they are now even while they're spending hundreds of millions, which is some way short of "equal." And the peculiar bitterness that stems from this.

Everton fans, I don't doubt, impressed upon you how "equal" they are. Like I say, they still cannot accept the reality - a reality that repeats year upon year. They think they should be doing much better than they are. But why?

They don't even get near Liverpool in derby games never mind over a full season - it’s one of the more lopsided cross city derbies in the country. We're more likely to struggle v Rovers than Liverpool v Everton.

Everton fans might not be the angriest but they are the angriest/bitterest. An angry bitterness that consumes them like no other fanbase. Because of how far they've fallen whilst Liverpool simultaneously have soared. As Merrick was saying.

Everton are now mediocre PL fodder, having been English football royalty. While Liverpool are global giants. This is a unique about-turn in cross-city fortunes and a unique bitterness is the result.

Missed it. What ya saying? ???

No worries mate, I was wanging on about the 2013/2014 season when Liverpool narrowly missed out on winning the Premier League title by two points to Man City even though both teams scored over 100 league goals that season! Then I respectfully realised you were talking about a much more recent season - hence my humble edit! Apologies ... ?

The offside rule was brought in to stop goal hanging. How can being offside by a billimeter be goal hanging. Both players feet were on the bloody line of the penalty area.

VAR just ruins the game. Give me mistakes by refs and linesmen any day

Everton my second team in case anyone was wondering about why I’m so pissed about this

VAR is horrendous. It needs to be gotten rid of 100%. Goal line technology was the only technology the game actually needed.

It's the offside rule, or the current interpretation of it, that needs changing. A review of how it's judged for example, I think it should be just at foot level, or going back to the old "clear daylight' rule.

I think that until they can freeze frame at the exact moment the ball is played (they currently can’t) and they can be 100% confident that they can draw perpendicular lines from a body part off the ground properly, that VAR shouldn’t be used.

I do agree re feet though….so what if you’re leaning forward.

I also hate the fact that refs carry on play, someone is gonna get injured at some point.
