Chester v Welsh Assembly

22A

Recommended Posts

I heard on Thursday's news that Chester City are in trouble. They play in the English pyramid system and had fans watching their games over the Christmas / New Year period.

The Welsh Assembly has now announced that the majority of the Diva Stadium is in Wales and under their rules spectators are not permitted.

You can argue as to whether Welsh government taking a sensible stance or not, but if Google Maps is correct, seems odd if Chester didn’t realise they were hosting matches in Wales (white line being the border).

Whilst the pitch is in Wales, the overall "site" is clearly in both countries, so it's an interesting one.

Is it welsh or english that police it? Surely the answer tells you which country it is in?

English police. Land even owned by an English Council. They can’t even claim financial support from Sport Wales because they are an English club. Welsh authorities did not raise this issue when there was similar difference in covid rules in Dec 2020. Seems a waste of public money for them to do so now. BBC article here:

In believe In 2020 an event in the stadium car park had to be cancelled due to toilets being in Wales

Correct. The local theatre wanted to run a drive in cinema on the car park during lockdown in October 2020, which was allowed under English restrictions, however the toilets in the stadium are situated in Wales which didn't permit outdoor cinemas at the time.

It did go ahead in the end but they had to reduce the number of cars allowed and use space in the car park to put in temporary portaloos.

Chester is an English team , which plays in an English league with the majority of their supporters living in England . The ground is partly in Wales so the sensible and pragmatic approach would be allow Chester follows the UK guidelines on Covid   however Mark Drakeford the First Minister of Wales is an absolute bell end .

Sorry I may have missed the point here but you seem to be saying that the English FA or teams within the English FA should be able to ignore laws (if it's law)?

The rules have been made (by a bellend - I grant you that) and must be followed and if they aren't should be enforced by the correct authorities - the police.

Not sure that over rules law though does it? It’s a tough one to call. They had the same problem with the drive through cinema so it should have st least been on their radar that it may be an issue

More importantly, can anyone see an image of Brian May in the lotus position on the pitch?

I was interested to see the icon suggesting they serve champagne cocktails in that little tin shack attached to the stadium.

Gurt posh up Cheshire way!

Someone should make up a song about that:

"Always shit on the Welsh side of the border. Because that's where the toilets are.  Please make an orderly queue."

What complicates things further is that, whilst Cheshire West council own the ground and issue the safety certificate, business rates are paid to Flintshire council, who also issue the premises licence and at the last couple of games the Blues Bar at the ground has operated under Welsh laws - rule of 6, table service, no standing etc.

It's also impossible to access the ground directly from Wales, unless you come along the river path, cross some fields and jump over a hedge.

Apparently, they can play on the pitch to an empty stadium (Welsh rules) but beam the game to a large screen in the car park (English rules).....

I really hope they do put a screen in the car park if they have to go behind closed doors, just to highlight the absurdity of the situation.

Problem solved ?.

Border moved – Lookers Vauxhall Stadium now completely in England

Chester Football Club are delighted to announce we have reached an agreement in principle with the relevant bodies to have the Lookers Vauxhall Stadium’s surrounding area to be re-designated.

The boundary is now entirely within English sovereignty.

This move has been agreed with the English Heritage and Cheshire West Council.

CEO Mark Maguire said: “We have every respect for our Welsh neighbours.

“However, we are proud of our Cestrian traditions and have proudly sat on the border throughout our existence.

“We believe this bold and innovative move helps to re-establish the clubs identity and we are grateful for the cooperation of all the relevant bodies.”

There has been no agreement yet. Matter is completely bonkers, Chester have never had access to welsh govt support and rich of them raise this dispute now. I doubt they were even aware and was probably highlighted to them by a busybody.

A Wrexham supporting journo with too much time on his hands, to be precise.
