Did you know that Gianluigi Buffon had played at Ashton Gate?

Was looking back at some old memories and remenber attending this game when I was still in single digits for age and surprised to see that I've seen Buffon play.

Anyone else remember this a bit better than me?

Not many of the England squad made it big.

Yep. I was at that game and I was right behind the goal in the Atyeo stand that night. Great to know that he went on to achieve what he did and I saw him play on his early days. He would have been at Parma and they had a great team at the time, as anyone who used to watch football italia on channel 4 would be able to confirm.

And from someone who used to play a lot of championship manager back in the day, some of those names bring back a host of memories.

Yes I had the privilege of watching him even I didn't realise how big a star he would become.

Went to that game. Only Heskey and Carragher had proper international careers..

Strange that one of the only two players to really make a mark for England was one of the subs! He may have been a bit younger than the other defenders. Thinking back, I think my memory is that Matt Carbon looked like a really good player that night. Never really happened for him though.

The Italy team didn’t progress many into full internationals either.

I bet that Italian keeper didn't go on to much bigger and better things..

Amazingly, one of the best players to have never won the champions league. Lost the final 3 times. There's a fair few of them and he's by far the best keeper never to have won it. Brazilian Ronaldo and lothar matthaus are the two other huge stand outs when you consider how great they were and who they played for. None of them won the champions league. Yet djimi traore, Paul lambert and Ross Turnball all have champions league winners medals.

He won the uefa Cup with parma though. I suspect he's happy with his world Cup winners medal as well.

Came very close to watching one of my alltime greats in the anglo italian.

George hagi, what a player, the magican of the balkans.

Recall he was playing in it one year, but dont think we got out the group.

Did he not play at the Gate in a pre season game

against Steaua Bucharest in early 90s?
