Love this one.

Less well known is that his best mate hit tough times, and after a few years in the doldrums actually emigrated across the Atlantic and started working for some years in London. He finally retired around the Shepherd’s Bush area were he became well known locally as the….Queens Park Ranger..

StOKE City - Hawaiian name for a boy or girl

BlACKpool - very uncommon first name for boys

Scunthorpe…

I had a client once called Richard, whose company name and address included the town of Scunthorpe.

Sat in Derbyshire I could hear the squeals from the profanity checker and IT in London everytime he sent me an email or I sent him one.

Once that calmed down the s*d started signing his emails off as 'Dick'.

Great client, but IT and 'compliance' were ringing me several times a week, 'Dick' loved every minute of it, he used to send me an email and then call to discuss ...

Hello City fans everywhere. Here’s to a cracking game and a convincing home win. On the topic of a win it is  the final name at the foot of this post!

Peterborough United was formed in 1934 at Peterborough's Angel Hotel to provide a replacement for Peterborough and Fletton United, who had folded two years previously. They were elected to the league in 1960 at the expense of Gateshead, and won the Fourth Division title at the first attempt, scoring a record 134 goals. The Posh then spent seven seasons in the 3rd Division before being relegated, being deducted 19 points for illegal payments to players, a record which stood until Luton lost 30 points.

Peterborough have found life tough this season on their return to the Championship. Travel sickness has been a major problem with 16 defeats and two draws in 20  matches on the road. However, their last two away results have been encouraging, in their last game before the International break Peterborough registered their first win in 16 league games 3-1 away at QPR. They also drew 1-1 at Bournemouth in early March.

Last Saturday they were home to Boro and were well beaten 4-0 and on Tuesday they hosted Luton that finished 1-1, Jonson Clarke-Harris equalised in the 87 minute, he then hit the post in the 95 minute. Ex-Gas player Clarke-Harris is certainly one to watch, he was awarded the League One Player of the Year Award in 2021. He has 12 goal involvements in all competitions for the Posh this season with 10 goals and two assists. The forward is currently top goalscorer for Peterborough United collecting three Man of The Match awards already this campaign. He has scored five goals in his last five matches.

They are in a real relegation fight sitting in 24 place with 27 points from 40 games. Their defensive record is the worst in the division with 81 goals conceded, with 72 we have the third worst number of goals conceded. As this article reveals this is one of our worst ever seasons for goals conceded: https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/sport/football/bristol-city-defensive-record-season-6907681

Over the years our head to head record has been good we have won 28, lost 14 and drawn 6.

We have the opportunity of a rare double. At their place earlier in the season we registered a 3-2 win when Chris Martin's 84th-minute winner sent 1,200 City fans home signing in the rain. A Sammie Szmodics brace threatened to dampen City’s spirits at a rain-soaked Weston Homes Stadium, but we battled through the treacherous conditions, here are the highlights: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/highlights-peterborough-united-2-3-bristol-city/

On 1 May 2021 They were promoted back to the Championship after an eight year stay in League One after coming back from 3–0 down to draw 3–3 against rivals Lincoln City following a stoppage time penalty by Jonson Clarke-Harris.

In September 2020 Sammie Szmodics signed permanently for Peterborough on a four year contract after signing for an undisclosed fee from us, believed to be in excess of £1m, with a number of other clubs rumoured to be interested, including Sunderland and Portsmouth.

Szmodics scored 16 goals in all competitions in the 2020–21 season helping his side win promotion back to the Championship.

Their highest transfer fee was paid to us, it exceeded £1.25m for Mo Eisa in June 2019, they subsequently sold him for an undisclosed fee to MK Dons. The £8m fee they received for Britt Assombalonga in 2014 from Nottingham Forest is the highest they’ve ever received for a player.

On the 20th February 2022, Darren Ferguson left Peterborough United for the third time, after offering his resignation to club co-owner Darragh Macanthony. Ferguson left the club in the relegation zone of the Sky Bet Championship, five points from safety. Matthew Etherington was placed in temporary charge. Grant McCann took charge on 24 February 2022.

Many of us think of Barry Fry, whose now 76, when we think of Posh, he was a winger in his playing days. Fry was an apprentice at Manchester United in his youth, and had brief spells with Bolton Wanderers, Luton Town and Leyton Orient, before he retired prematurely due to injury.

He’s a colourful character! He starred in a documentary called There's Only One Barry Fry. The programme included some of Fry's dressing room antics. In December 2018, he was charged by the Football Association for alleged misconduct in relation to betting after claims that he placed bets on matches or competitions during the 2017–18 season, in breach of FA rules. He accepted the charges, and in January 2019 he was suspended from all footballing activity for four months, with three months of those suspended for a two-year period.

He has managed Dunstable Town, Bedford Town, Maidstone United, Southend United, Barnet, Birmingham City and, most recently, Peterborough United (he was there nine years as manager until 2005). Fry is currently director of football at Peterborough.

Our squads today is likely to include Semenyo and Williams.

Todays ref is John Brooks he’s been in charge of 15 games and issued 53 yellows and no reds. He comes from Melton Mowbray which is 35 miles from Peterborough. The last time he was involved in a City match was when Watford gave us a 6-0 thrashing back in February 2021.

The programme is here: https://robinstv.bcfc.co.uk/digital-matchday-programme/

For those of my vintage it’s going to be quite a nostalgic day, as City stars from the 1960s will be honoured just before kick off. More than half-a-century since they graced the BS3 turf, 16 players and former manager Alan Dicks will be applauded at 2.50pm. Please take your seats early to celebrate the players who between them clocked up almost 3,000 appearances for the Robins.

For practical reasons so close to kick-off, the group - Dicks, Danny Bartley, Ian Broomfield, Phil Coggins, Jantzen Derrick, Brian Drysdale, Tony Ford, John Galley, Mike Gibson, Johnny Giles, Bobby Gould, Geoff Merrick, Geoff Palmer, Gordon Parr, Trevor Tainton, Johnny Watkins, celebrating his 89th birthday, and Bobby Williams - will be heralded in their Lansdown Stand seats and their pictures shown on the big screen.

Posh facts

  • Peterborough was designated a New Town in 1967, to house some of London's overspill population in new townships around the existing urban area.
  • Peterborough is a medieval city with a rich heritage. The splendours of the fine Medieval Cathedral, the Bronze Age settlement of Flag Fen and the Elizabethan grandeur of Burghley House are well known.
  • Peterborough is home to one of the largest concentrations of Italian immigrants in the UK. This is mainly as a result of labour recruitment in the 1950s by the London Brick Company in the southern Italian regions of Apulia and Campania.
  • Famous fans include Mike Tyson, Adrian Durham and Aston Merrygold.
  • Posh set the record for the highest number of league goals 134 (Terry Bly alone scoring 52) in the 1960-61 season, which was their first season in the Football League, in which they won the Fourth Division title.

Finally, the names teaser, it’s just too time consuming to illustrate from which team each is taken from but I think they are all genuine. Thanks to everyone who contributed, when I first did it I came up with just 39, the list now contains 104 names!

Before the big reveal a special mention regarding the etymology and historical origin of the name Bristol.

Bristol is a place name, a populous urban city located in southwestern England (near Bath and Gloucester). The name is derived from the Olde English Brycgstow meaning “place at the bridge” in reference to the original bridge built over the River Avon where the settlement was established circa 1000 A.D. Bristol became one of the most important medieval cities in England (after London and York).

Ironically, the usage of Bristol as a female given name did not originate from Bristol, England; rather, American’s have Vice Presidential hopeful turned political pundit Sarah Palin to thank for Bristol’s uprising as a girl’s name.

Palin named her second child and first daughter Bristol for three disparate reasons. One, Bristol Inn was where Palin worked at the time; two, Bristol, Connecticut houses the headquarters for ESPN (Sarah had dreams of being a sportscaster); and, three, Bristol Bay is located in Alaska where Bristol’s father Todd grew up. So apparently, Sarah Palin saw Bristol as a good omen and naturally bestowed the moniker upon her daughter. Bristol Palin herself became a celebrity of sorts when her teen pregnancy was announced during her mother’s out-spoken, right-wing, morally-righteous run for the Vice Presidency. With her unusual name suddenly splashed all over the news, Bristol came straight onto the American radar. In another ironic twist, Sarah Palin was harshly criticized for her support of Alaska’s “bridge to nowhere” (an example of pork barrel spending at its worst) while her daughter’s name means “the place at the bridge”. The female given name Bristol is really only used in America.

Just for the record I hate Peterborough, always have. There may be some lingering dislike caused by the horrible journeys I used to take to my company's Head Office there, or the fact that even people in Peterborough struggle to tell you where it is. (Somewhere off the A1 being the best description).

But I think it goes back further than that, it's because they remind me of the Gas with the way they revel in their shite ground and their 'plucky underdog' image. Like the Gas they have also embraced dodgy owners, managers and DoF's and have an annoying habit of getting the best out of raw talent and making money out of it.

I hope the 350 mile return journey is as miserable as sin for them and is literally pointless

Seriously, if we can't beat Peterborough today, with good players out of contract, no money to spend and a couple likely to move away in the summer, I really fear that next season will be our last in the Championship.

We really need to be performing a lot better than we have of late. I'm really beginning to worry about Nigel Pearsons tactics and formations.
