Hull City at home match day thread

Good day fellow Reds. Our final home game of the season has arrived and it maybe the last time we see a few of our players at Ashton Gate in a City shirt. A crowd of 20,000 + is anticipated, which is really tremendous support.

With both teams having secured Championship survival today it’s hopefully about playing without any pressure and let’s hope we can finish the season well by making it five unbeaten today. Over the years we have a reasonable record against Hull City, we’ve won 36, lost 28 and drawn 25. Hull haven't won a league game at Ashton Gate since a 2-1 Championship success in 2012, though arguably the most memorable meeting in the West Country between the two clubs came in April 2018 when the pair shared a 10-goal thriller. We twice led by two goals before they came back to lead 5-4, only to see Joe Bryan crash in a 94th-minute leveler.

Earlier in the season, in Yorkshire, it finished 2-2 with Matty James’ added-time equaliser securing a point at the MKM Stadium, highlights:

The commentary, when they scored their second, was ‘Bristol City were far too passive’, which has been something of a recurring theme this season.

Last weekend both teams notched three with Hull putting three past Reading. They are immediately below us in the table in 18th with two points fewer.

Our last six games have ended in 3 draws, 2 wins and 1 defeat = 9 points, Hull have recorded 3 wins and 3 defeats = 9 points.

Adam Pearson sold the club to a consortium led by Paul Duffen in June 2007, stating that he "had taken the club as far as I could", and would have to relinquish control in order to attract "really significant finance into the club". Under Paul Duffen and manager Phil Brown, Hull City improved greatly on their relegation battle of 2006–07 and qualified for the play-offs after finishing the season in third place. They beat Watford 6–1 on aggregate in the semi-finals and of course played us in the final on 24 May 2008, which they won 1–0 at Wembley Stadium in front of a crowd of  86,703 with Hull native Dean Windass scoring the winning goal. On 24 April 2021, they secured an immediate return to the EFL Championship, with two games to play, after a 2–1 win against a Lincoln City. On 29 April 2021, at the EFL Awards ceremony, Grant McCann secured the EFL League One Manager of the Season award.

Back in January of this year Hull City were taken over by the Turkish-based Acun Medya Group, which ended Assem and Ehab Allam's 12-year spell in charge of the club, during which fans repeatedly protested about the way it was run. The Allam’s had been looking to sell up for a number of years but a number of deals have fallen through, including one in 2016 involving a consortium from China and Japan collapsed. Acun Ilicali, the new owner, is a Turkish businessman and TV personality, he ultimately reached a £20 million agreement with the Allam family.

They appointed ex-Rangers and Ajax striker Shota Arveladze as head coach on a two-and-a-half-year deal. His coaching CV includes stints in the Netherlands, Turkey, Israel and, most recently, in Uzbekistan. The 48-year-old Georgian replaced Grant McCann, who was sacked following the takeover.

Owner Acun Illcali has pitched a very special away trip later this year. At a recent fans event, Illcali announced plans to take 250 supporters, with one guest each, on a five-star holiday to his home country Turkey this summer. The winners will be selected from a lottery for June's five-day trip to Antalya. "I thought about what I can do to make our fans feel different. I want being a Hull City fan to be a privilege," he said. We're going to have a private chartered flight from Humberside Airport to Antalya. Five days in a five-star hotel. We're going to enjoy together, everybody will have good memories."

On 29 June 2010, Nigel Pearson was appointed Hull City manager. Despite financial difficulties, following relegation from the Premier League, Pearson was still able to enter the transfer market, bringing in players such as Nolberto Solano, James Harper, Liam Rosenior, Robert Koren and Jay Simpson. The club won their first away game in over a year at Norwich City in September. Following that victory, Pearson's club broke a 66-year-old record with 14 consecutive away games without defeat. The season ended with an 11th-place finish.

Hull started the 2011–12 season with the club sitting one point outside the play-offs, having a game in hand in the middle of November; however, on 7 November 2011 Pearson requested permission to talk to his former club Leicester. Pearson was persuaded to rejoin Leicester City under their new ownership by chairman Vichai Raksriaksorn, and he was re-appointed as manager on 15 November 2011.

City will welcome a Famous Five from the 1990s ahead of kick-off. Wayne Allison, Junior Bent, Rob Edwards, Nicky Morgan and Mark Shail will at 2.45pm be pitch-side, where they will be interviewed and shown on the big screen.

Bristolian Danny Coles played for us and them, he made 148 appearances for us between 1999 and 2005 scoring six times. Another local is Alfie Jones who will be returning to his home city today. The Hull City defender was born in Bristol, although he never played for either City or Rovers, coming through the ranks at Southampton instead.

After bagging a brace in the Tiger's last outing against Reading, Lewis-Potter will be eager to contribute in front of goal once again as Hull City go in search of their fourth victory in their last five. Harvey Cartwright might be given a chance to notch-up a third Championship appearance of the season for them today and NP might decide to give opportunities to a couple of our younger players. In his presser he said ‘they’ll be a few disappointed players.’

Thanks @Jerseybean I found your report very interesting, particularly the bit on how to survive a tiger attack. I’ve often been worried walking through the park to a game as the bushes could be hiding a lurking tiger ready to attack. Thanks to you, today, I’ll have no worries as if a tiger leaps out and growls I’ll know what to do to survive. Any advice on grizzly bears?

Cundy & Atkinson continue improvement
Williams to shine.
Idehen to get another run.
But most of all Conway to get a decent run out.

Hopefully I won't get too carried away on the Red Stripe.

No real logic in including anyone we don’t want to keep now, though accept that in the case of Scott & Semenyo that might be out of our hands.

If Klose, Cundy & King are in the 18 then I think they will be here next season.

It would be good. The Huddersfield game is a bit different - there could be a lot riding on the result so I`d rather we kept it `honest` regarding team selection up there. We`d be livid if we were competing with them for a top place and discovered their opponents had put out a team of kids.

Shows how our fanbase has grown in recent years to be honest - to be able to still pull in 20k at home after the dire season we have had is v impressive.

I don’t care what anyone says we are a well supported club at this level..

The team kind of picks it self with the squad we have but I expect Tanner to feature at some point.

Wouldn’t be surprised to see todays attendance being our biggest of the season - looking at the OS, there are now only tickets available in the LS….SS and Dolman sold out

If there is a winner between Bournemouth and Forest, I think other than mathematically they are out it.

I have half a memory of a side a few years back making something like 11 changes when they were secure in the play offs but could not get top two for their last match, and that it was Huddersfield. There was something riding on it for the team they were playing and others were not happy. I suspect it will all come down to what side they want to put out for us.

I’ve been on a lovely trip this morning with my wife and daughter around the centre, we got the train from Parkway to Temple Meads, then the ferry around the docks to the centre, what a beautiful place we live in!.  
 

Anyway, when we got to the centre I saw a lot of the Hull City players taking a stroll around the docks and I must say they looked way too relaxed, like they are already on the beach relaxed I’m talking, so I deduced that we will spank them 3-0 guaranteed!

That season, Huddersfield rested players over the last 2-3 games.  lots of people saying they’d lost momentum…but they got promoted.
