Mr X
Interesting article on the BBC about the length of time a ball is actually in play over a 90 minute match. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61342349 No surprise that Stoke under Pulis had a game where the ball was only in play for 39 minutes! And for 35 minutes of that, the ball was in the air from a Delap throw in. 1
The Journalist
What’s genuinely interesting is the vote at the bottom - more than 10,000 people, a decent sample size, and an absolute overwhelming majority think it should be introduced. Scare_Man
The amount of time wasting and ‘gamesmanship’ that goes on in every single game is a real frustration for the team on the other end, having a stop clock system should prevent that - obviously the purists would be dead against any sort of change like this but those stats speak for themselves
steveybadger
Anybody see the article the other day about WSL matches only having 1 ball available during the match? So occasionally you get huge delays at times getting the ball back from the stands. Bizarre.
ZumerZetSmithy
i would preferer a shorter match in time but again it we will loose out due to dodgy officials

Ball rolling time has increased over dedades. Compare ball rolling time now v the eighties/nineties. What the stats tell you is that possession based teams have higher ball rolling times, and those that place greater emphasis on direct football and set plays have lower ball rolling times. Stokes stats were a reflection of their game approach not gamesmanship. Having a stop the clock system would mean some games would be two hours long. Think about the variables for games, levels (grass roots to pro) and fans. There would also still be gamesmanship. Stopping the clock, still stops a game and breaks momentum. The turtle
40 mins, stop the clock. Players would soon stop all this messing about if they realised it made no difference. What happened after real scored in injury time was beyond a joke. Taking momentum out of a game has always been more or less tolerated, but its gone too far now, games at elite level literally die. As an aside.... Now that's another level

Now that's another level At the beginning...The referee blows his whistle, then he moves the ball with his hands. Should have been handball. The irony of an Atleti fan complaining about a team shithousing
Guest
I honestly don't understand why if the ball is not literally in play why the ref doesn't stop their watch? As soon as the ball becomes 'live' (as soon as it leaves the hand from a throw in or is kicked from a set piece/goal kick etc) the watch starts again. Am I that nieve to think that this isn't beyond the realms of possibility? You'd still get shithousery at the end of the game to break up play, but the amount of time of actual game play would remain the same. True all the games would finish at half 5 though... NBA basketball games are 48 minutes long but take over 2 hours to play out. (and it's LOSE, not loose.) Edited May 8, 2022 by TBW

This would also stop time wasting when substitutes are made.
