Edgy Red
Apologies if i've missed this in another thread, but does anyone know any more about Bakers situation? If (and i appreciate it's a big If) he was to join in pre season training and be available for us next season, it would be a massive boost. A fit Nathan Baker is a very good Champ centre back and personally i would love to see him back next season.

I agree and i think for his own health, the safest option for him would be to call it a day. Surely by now, both Nathan and the club would know what the future holds? If he is unable to play again it would have been great to have given him a send off at the Hull game. He always gave 100% and when fit, was one of the first names on the teamsheet for me. Hopefully this will sort itself out over the next few weeks, and we will have a plan in place either way.
Northern Red
It was suggested in the other thread that we might be trying to resolve what happens with his contract, e.g. whether insurance covers it, before announcing anything. All the signs are that we won't be seeing him again.

It could be messy, given we're probably talking about half a million or so then the club have to just wait. could be Baker has dug his ankles in and said he'll just see out the remainder of his contract without retiring but be deemed incapable of playing. Could be the club are trying to negotiate paying him off early. Think if a player is forced into retirement from injury or similar the PFA may be involved with the payout but you'd need categorical proof the player is incapable of playing. With Baker he might be technically deemed 'capable' of playing but its just a severe risk.

Yep, it's the sort of thing that ordinarily you might expect him to have been asked about on the radio tonight, that it didn't come up probably suggests that they're respecting confidentiality. If he did come back again to play for us, I'm not sure how comfortable I'd be watching him play. Don't get me wrong, prior to his concussion I loved his 100% aggressive nature, but watching that approach wouldn't sit right with me knowing that one more bang to the head could result in severe disability or death. I'm not sure I'd like to watch. I appreciate it could happen to anyone at any time, but surely the risk is a lot higher in this case? 5

Single concussion is about 10 days rest and observation , the second coming so quickly after is a worry. They would be taking every precaution to make sure there are no long term problems. With Bakers age, and the way he plays, I wouldn't be surprised if he retires. But I'm not surprised he ( and the medical) are taking their time to see if it's Baker's decision or on health grounds. Baker has every right too, he signed a contract and is within his right to see out said contract, If he has to retire through injury then there will be a payout owed, whether that be by the club's insurers or the club itself, It's the same in the normal world, if you get injured during work which forces you to retire then the firm you work for are liable and will pay out,
DT The Optimist
If he had to retire due to ill health issues would he and club not be covered by medical insurances to protect both player and clubs value in player? why would a head injury be any different from a physical injury such as bad leg or career ending knee injury etc etc . and of course his head injury might be exactly that but as fans we speculate. I am sure a decision on NB is imminent after due medical process is concluded. .

So is it a case of he can’t head a ball anymore now then? Surprised this hasn’t been more covered by the club. The sort of message that needs to be put out there to bring awareness to the issue. We don't know mate, that's the problem, It's up to the player whether he wants it out in the open or not I suppose, I'm sure the club is doing its upmost to support him, but we as fans have to be patient on this one imo 4

The Club will , rightfully , wait until medical results and reports are in, then they would consult with Baker. The type of player he is , I imagine he would want to play, but if medical advice says otherwise he would be crazy to carry on.

Not sure about heading balls but the risk of another elbow or whack to the head could be far more serious...
redsquirrel
i certainly wouldnt want to see him die on the pitch and i dont see how any specialist would clear him to play just incase it happened. surely it would then result in a case against the specialist. Probably because NP was asked twice in 2 / 3 weeks and he angrily said we would be lucky to see him again this season. As the season only finished recently, there's no other opportunity to ask. I guess GT had a fair amount to chat about last night so perhaps didn't have time or respected the mans right to private medical care. This is a much more realistic problem, I would also imagine it is a very delicate scenario in getting the best for Baker There are not many footballers (or sportsmen) that retire due to a an injury like this and can imagine that there will be a large amount of publicity not only around the way we handled him throughout but also the bigger risks in sport will no doubt be massive news as well. Just my personal opinion but I would be very surprised to see Baker in a football shirt again, but as he has another year with us there certainly isn't any need to rush any process, especially is getting him back on a pitch again meant he was more seriously injured in the future

Richard Gould covered this in some detail on Radio Bristol prior to the Hull game. Pearson also answered a press question on it in one of the press conferences (Sheff U?) towards the end of the season. It simply isn’t the case that the topic hasn’t been covered.

I can`t imagine Bakes would be allowed to play if the medical advice said no, the club has a duty of care just like any employer and we would be negligent if we let him play. It`s harsh but the player`s health and perhaps even his life is at stake here.

The risk is more of developing a long-lead degenerative brain disease, like Parkinson's or MND, than of instant death. The worrying thing is the more concussion-causing blows you receive, the more likely you are that lighter blows in future will cause concussion: Your susceptibility increases. Modern brain imaging and other medical tools can give club's medical teams a much more precise view of how much trauma has been sustained, its likelihood of recurrence. Also Nathan will have been assessed for post-concussion syndrome, which can cause depression, as well as lack of co-ordination and tiredness. My near-neighbour, a neurosurgeon, says it can never be an exact science however, because what happens in future games cannot be predicted. It will be a judgement call, a set of percentile parameters, and ultimately Nathan's call if he wants to play again. If he does, City may decide that isn't with us. Depending on the expert advice they get.
t_b
Surprised there still hasn’t been anything further announced about this. I guess end of June is the usual “contract end” point so if we are doing something in full season criteria, maybe that’s the point? Just seems arbitrary though if so. Saw that he got married last weekend - doesn’t seem to have been a full on footballers wedding, not seen anything shared by any other footballers nor do I recognise any on the social media posts! Exactly right - it’s not an exact science and Baker will have to make a choice based on the medical facts he’s given as to continue playing or not. I know what I’d do in his position - quit playing. BTRFTG
I think it best to wait until anything is officially announced. Baker's health, for him and his family, is paramount. I know City have handled this brilliantly to date, it's about him and his wellbeing, not money. 7
