Playing Academy Coaches

Good article in The Athletic  here about Jay Spearing at 33 turning down a contract with Tranmere to return to Liverpool and coach their academy kids - but with the mentality that he will be a registered player and available to play in academy games as well (although obviously not in the first team PL 25 man squad.

It shows a good transitional path available to players as they start to consider the end (Andy King?) whilst benefiting the younger generation

I'm not sure, but could it be that Southampton seem to bring through a lot of talented youngsters so, as it apparently works for them, it might be a good idea and worth trying here?

Southampton brought through talented youngsters before they did this

Well, of course, a certain Gareth Bale being one of many, and they have been renowned for their youth production for many years - their academy was even taking promising youngsters from the Bath area.

Nevertheless, they seem to have adopted a system whereby an experienced elder player actually plays in their academy team.

Point being they were doing it on a consistent basis long before they were doing this so it’s not like this has made them successful at doing it when they were anyway. What happens to the young player who plays in that position? If you’re a second year scholar (18) would you sign a pro deal at Southampton knowing there’s one less spot in your position for getting game time at 23‘s level

It might be a crap idea, it might be the next evolution of academy development.  The counter to your argument argument is that although one scholar might miss out (decide not to sign), the other 10 teammates develop quicker.

We need to open our minds to new approaches.

Kaizen!

I get the idea of it, another part of my belief is that on pitch it’s better for academy players work out what’s going wrong, if you have a senior player giving instructions for 90 minutes you could miss out on player thought development/problem solving in game as well
