Mr X
Does anyone have any information on the old plans for a previous new stadium in Hengrove? A friend mentioned it to me and it wasn't something I could remember ever being discussed.
RoystonFoote'snephew
I know the Gas have considered every scrap of land going but surely Hengrove was a step too far.
awbb
I seem to remember this was while Davison was in charge, so 96-98 time. It may have even been after his original plans to redevelop the Williams. I don’t think it ever got beyond it being identified as a location for a new stadium though.

That`s pretty much what I remember. I do recall having a drive up there one day to see where it was planned for though.

sglosbcfc
Glad we stayed at Ashton gate, perfect mixture of modern and historical.
Barrs Court Red
It was part of the World Cup or Euros bid, or would have formed part of it. Didn’t the locals have a referendum and voted against it? Not long after it became apparent Hengrove was a non starter, we had plans to develop AG into a 30k stadium which died a death when the ownership changed? Hard to remember, but I have a copy of Gatepost which had the plans in.
handsofclay
My late father lived in Whitchurch at the time and residents of Whitchurch and Hengrove were sent details of the plans as well as free tickets to Ashton Gate.

elhombrecito
I definitely remember having a questionnaire sent around to local residents asking for our thoughts.

BS4 on Tour...
I do remember at the time thinking ‘Bristol City playing home games there - on a large patch of land between Brislington, Knowle West, Hengrove, Hartcliffe, Withywood and Whitchurch - what could possibly go wrong for away supporters?!’

With the benefit of hindsight, yes, but lots were pretty unhappy at the time - myself included. Kudos to the club and its design team, they really came up with a truly fabulous set of proposals, luckily we had space to develop. The value of long-term planning and good masterplans, and a clear vision.
fatchers
The Gas 'offered to share it with us' at one stage but I don't recall any mention of them offering to put any money in.

Harry
Personally, I thought this was a good idea at the time and I think we should’ve done it. Not doing this back in the mid 90’s held us back financially for years once the ffp regs etc arrived.
Wanderingred
40,000 seats was a bit ambitious considering we were averaging only around 10k back then.
