Plymouth Argyle pre-season friendly match day thread

The Pilgrims are our third pre-season opponents today with a 3 pm kick off at Home Park.

The match will be pay on the day.  For supporters who are unable to get to Home Park, an Argyle TV Video Match-Pass for the game costs just £5 and is available here. To watch the game, supporters will need to either register for an Argyle Account (click here), or log in to an existing one, and then click here to purchase a pass.

They finished 7th in league one last season. Argyle missed out on a top six finish after a crushing, demoralising 5-0 loss to a rampant MK Dons.

They have played at Home Park, known as the "Theatre of Greens", since 1901. The club takes its nickname, "The Pilgrims", from an English religious group that left Plymouth for the New World in 1620. The club crest features the Mayflower, the ship that carried the pilgrims to Massachusetts. The club has predominantly played in green and white throughout their history, with a few exceptions in the late 1960s and early 1970s when white was the colour of choice. The city of Plymouth is the largest in England fielding a League club to never to have hosted top-flight football.

They are the most southerly and westerly League club in England and the only professional club named Argyle. Much speculation surrounds the origin of the name Argyle. One explanation is that the club was named after the Argyll and Sunderland Highlanders, an army regiment with a strong football side of its own. Another theory is given by the local geography–suggesting the name comes either from the nearby public house, The Argyle Tavern, where the founder members may have met, or from a local street Argyle Terrace. The club adopted its current name when it became fully professional in 1903.

In competitive encounters we have won 26, lost 23 and drawn 13 times against them.

On Tuesday they signed midfielder Finn Azaz on a season-long loan from Premier League side Aston Villa. The 21-year-old spent last season on loan at Newport County and was named in the League Two Team of the Season having scored seven goals in 42 games. The former West Bromwich Albion youngster joined Villa in 2021 after a season-long loan at Cheltenham where the club won the League Two title. Yesterday they signed Norwich City full-back Bali Mumba on a season-long loan deal.

So far this window Argyle have added four new players, these two plus former Rotherham winger Mikel Miller and ex-Accrington defender Matt Butcher.

Brendan Galloway will play his first game for 235 days when he gets a run out today. The Zimbabwe international defender is making his comeback from a serious knee injury.

Argyle manager Steven Schumacher has made five changes from the starting XI which began the tie against Swansea City on Tuesday night.

Michael Cooper returns in goal, while midweek goalscorer Ryan Hardie also starts. Adam Randell, Luke Jephcott and Finn Azaz also start against the Robins.

On the bench, there are returns for long-term absentees Brendan Galloway and Panutche Camara.
