Forest Green Rovers pre-season friendly match day thread

Recommended Posts

2pm today and it’s Forest Green Rovers at the HPC followed by Exeter City at 430pm.

The pre-season double header will be live-streamed free to 2022/23 Season Ticket holders. Season Ticket holders will have received a single code to watch all the home pre-season matches. The games will also be available to non-Season Ticket holders for £4.99, which will cover both matches in one programme starting at 1.45pm.

FGR finished fifth in the Conference in 2014/15 qualifying for the play-offs; they went on to lose 3–0 on aggregate to Bristol Rovers in the semi-finals. The following season saw them finish as runners-up in the renamed National League, their highest-ever league position; in the subsequent play-offs they defeated Dover Athletic 2–1 in the semi-finals, before losing 3–1 to Grimsby Town in the final at Wembley. A third consecutive play-off campaign was secured with a third-place finish in 2016/17.  After beating Degenham and Redbridge 3–1 in the semi-finals, they defeated Tranmere Rovers by the same scoreline in the final at Wembley, earning promotion to league two. This made Nailsworth the smallest town ever to host a Football League club. Last season they secured an automatic promotion spot to league one after a draw against Bristol Rovers and clinched the title following a 2–2 draw away at Mansfield Town.

A little-known fact is that Nailsworth has the largest number of working water wheels (per square mile) in the country!

Todays opponents are well known for their green credentials. The United Nations has recognised Forest Green Rovers as the world’s first carbon-neutral football club and it was described by FIFA as the “greenest team in the world”.

In September 2020, Arsenal fullback Hector Bellerin became the second-largest shareholder in the club. In August 2021, Forest Green Rovers announced a new partnership with clean energy and electric vehicle YouTube channel, Fully Charged and named their pitch accordingly to The Fully Charged New Lawn.

Forest Green Rovers kick off their season against the Gas on 30 July.

FGR had good test against Championship side Coventry City in a behind-closed-doors friendly at Lilleshall Sports Centre on12 July, which finished 1-0 to Coventry. Rovers preparations for their first-ever season in the third-tier continued with a 3-0 victory over Melksham Town.

However, a step up in quality of opposition saw Forest Green fall to defeats against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Swansea City.

They managed to bounce back with a 2-1 victory over Southern League Premier Division South side Swindon Supermarine at the weekend, which would have restored confidence in the Rovers' squad. They wrap up their pre-season with friendlies against us and Newport County.
