Flounder
Hello Everyone A few weeks ago I was moaning to my mate FDS-Leggy about City's poor start. I may have even suggested Tinman was not the man for the job. FDS-Leggy pointed out to me how bad it was when Wilson took over and of course, we have to give Tinman a fair crack of the whip. So I decided to see if there were any of city's managers since Wardy I'd have (quite unfairly) sacked when judged only on their first eight results. (Of course the are Lies, Damn lies and Statistics!) (L=League) (C=CUP) John Ward Grimsby 1-1 Bristol C 09-08-1997 L Bristol C 0-0 Bristol R 12-08-1997 C Bristol C 2-0 Blackpool 16-08-1997 L Northampton 2-1 Bristol C 23-08-1997 L Bristol R 1-2 Bristol C 26-08-1997 C Bristol C 3-0 Wigan 30-08-1997 L Bristol C 0-2 Fulham 02-09-1997 L Wrexham 2-1 Bristol C 13-09-1997 L P8 W3 D2 L3 An Away win over the Gas! The Board is happy! No chance of the sack here then! Benny Bradford 5-0 Bristol C 31-10-1998 L Bristol C 1-6 Wolves 07-11-1998 L C Palace 2-1 Bristol C 14-11-1998 L Bristol C 1-1 Stockport 21-11-1998 L Birmingham 4-2 Bristol C 28-11-1998 L Bristol C 2-0 Sheff Utd 05-12-1998 L Bristol C 1-1 C Palace 12-12-1998 L Norwich 2-1 Bristol C 19-12-1998 L P8 W1 D2 L5 We were basically relegated before he took over. The club seemed to be in chaos with a very messy change of manager. Although Benny did have some quality players to work with. On these results He'd get the "backing" of the Board.....and be sacked the very next morning! Tony Pullis Reading 2-1 Bristol C 07-08-1999 L Cambridge 2-2 Bristol C 10-08-1999 C Bristol C 3-1 Bournemouth 14-08-1999 L Wigan 2-1 Bristol C 21-08-1999 L Bristol C 2-1 Cambridge 24-08-1999 C Bristol C 1-1 Bury 28-08-1999 L Bristol C 5-2 Blackpool 04-09-1999 L Bristol C 0-0 Millwall 11-09-1999 L P8 W3 D3 L2 Best start so far! Only two losses, The Board decides it's enough to keep his job. Which is lucky as I don't want a letter from his Lawyer. Tony Fawthrop Bournemouth 2-3 Bristol C 15-01-2000 L Bristol C 0-0 Wigan 22-01-2000 L Bristol C 1-1 Bournemouth 25-01-2000 L Bury 0-0 Bristol C 29-01-2000 L Bristol C 3-0 Chesterfield 05-02-2000 L Blackpool 1-2 Bristol C 12-02-2000 L Bristol C 4-0 Reading 15-02-2000 C Bristol C 2-2 Notts Co 19-02-2000 L P8 W4 D4 L0 Hit the ground running, lost none in his first eight! Perhaps we should get him back? Where is he now? The Board would have to extend his contract on these results. Danny Wilson Wrexham 0-2 Bristol C 12-08-2000 L Bristol C 1-2 Stoke 19-08-2000 L Bristol C 2-2 Brentford 22-08-2000 L Cambridge 1-0 Bristol C 26-08-2000 L Bristol C 0-1 Rotherham 28-08-2000 L Brentford 2-1 Bristol C 05-09-2000 L Bristol C 0-1 Swindon 09-09-2000 L Oldham 0-0 Bristol C 16-09-2000 L P8 W1 L5 D2 A win to start, fading into a month of misery! After a EGM of the Board he would have to go by "not so mutual consent". Tinman Bristol C 1-1 Torquay 07-08-2004 L Barnsley 2-1 Bristol C 10-08-2004 L Bournemouth 2-2 Bristol C 14-08-2004 L Bristol C 1-2 Swindon 21-08-2004 L Wycombe 0-1 Bristol C 24-08-2004 C Port Vale 3-0 Bristol C 28-08-2004 L Bristol C 4-1 Brentford 30-08-2004 L Peterborough 0-1 Bristol C 04-09-2004 L P8 W3 D2 L3 Bad start, turned it around and with two wins in a row and with only three losses, the Board would have to say carry on. So..... Ward Wobbles (but stays because of the Gas win)! Benny gets the boot. Pullis plays on. Fawthrop is fantastic. Danny's on the Dole. Brian get my Backing. Niall
Good post, though even my bad maths can spot that Tins is currently P8 W3 D2 L3, not 4/2/2. And, obviously, he gets my backing too.
cider head
interesting stats, but i would say we should back tinnion as he is determined to get it right for city and i'm sure he will. his radio bristol interview after port vale said it all for me as he came across just how we were feeling in the stands, yeah tins will get it right. Dave L
Very interesting to contrast the start that Wilson made with that of Tinman. Danny went on to be given four years to try and take this club up. I don't anticipate that it'll take Brian four years to get promotion, but statistics like this at least show that calling for a manager's head after a few disappointing results is short-term in the extreme. Mr Mosquito
I'm glad Wilson's gone - 4 chances at taking us up for a manager with so called 'great potential' was very poor. The Tinman was a shock choice in my mind but he has my full backing.
