  1. I completely agree and have been telling everyone about him - thought he was superb

I remember Jude (he was good too), Eze was unbelievable but missed the Wigan game so didn't see James

If Archie Gray isn't snapped up in the next 12 months by one of the big boys I will be absolutely amazed (even if they loan him back)

    Mehmeti - meh

The more I see him the more I think he is not up to the level, flatters to deceive and can't seem to go past a man with any conviction

Would rather have Bell out there at the moment

What clearly doesn’t help on threads like this is whenever Max makes a decent save (and it happens on in game threads) you get people saying “can’t believe people don’t rate Max” and then when he makes an error it’s “Max is crap”.

Again. He’s an average mid table keeper at this level. Hes 27 - I’m pretty sure he’s not going to improve or regress markedly in the next 2-3 years. He’s neither the messiah or a naughty boy - he’s just average overall, fine for where we are, and will need to be improved on if we are to progress.

Apart the 'naughty boy' bit which feels rather saucy - spot on

  3. Without hijacking the thread and turning into a Tommy thread, I agree with the fickleness comment above and I also don't think that is specific to him

It would be interesting to see what our first "striker" signing is and this will give an indication of what type of player LM sees playing in the '9'

It does feel like we would almost suit a false '9' and that isn't our Tom

Without paraphrasing the gaffer I do think we are an evolving beast and part of my frustration is that he is being judged on results with a playing squad he has inherited (which isn't top 6 as we all knew)

Who's fault is that?  Not sure really but he'll need at least a couple of windows to start to turn us into what he wants

Not sure this level of common sense is welcome around here.

For what it's worth - and I watch way less of us than many of you, so I'm by no means an authority on this - but the sentence in bold is the key bit to all of this. The results being broadly similar sort of confirm it.

By my eyes, we're now less aggressive in and out of possession but pass the ball more and aim to have more control. Some people will prefer one, some people will prefer the other, but because the players are the same the results are the same.

I posted this just before Pearson was sacked and I think it kind of tallies with what you're saying now...

"There is some sense in moving on at the end of this three-and-a-bit-year period and bringing in some fresh eyes to make the next push. We are trending upwards and that’s arguably a good time to change. And many of us were in favour of this - in principle - three years ago. We predicted it.

"But now we’ve arrived here it just feels wrong, it feels slightly unfair on the manager and at best seems tone deaf to the supporters. That’s the bit (I think) we’re all uncomfortable with."

I feel like, three months on, that's sort of playing out? We're broadly content with Manning and supportive of him, it's just difficult to shake off how the board got us from A to B.

    Great post and spot on

I think preference of play visually is a big factor and perhaps that is the barometer (without stats) that we all judge

I feel like we are more threatening and we play, for longer periods, in more attacking areas of the pitch - again, I don't have stats but that's the way it feels

Fevs - was interesting to see the Tommy stats and thanks for putting them up - in my mind, Tommy has changed roles under LM (more isolated and learning a new role) he took a while to get going (and still is) so can the stats be compared properly?  You are the expert

  5. How can anyone say we aren't a better side now under Manning?  Honestly if you can't see the improvements we've made as a team then I'm not sure where your head is at

Take aside the board bashing (which I completely understand) and compare things purely on a football basis and I would be absolutely amazed if, stats wise, we are not a much more defensively sound and threatening attacking side since LM has come in

Results will come if performances continue and to give the bloke a summary after 13 games is madness in my opinion - we just beat (and dominated really) a premier league side in the cup

I loved Nige, great guy, but I'm much more excited about the way we're going under Liam than I was under him for sure

  6. Big tank of a lad, think he'll find his place at full back eventually but certainly liked what we saw and liked his interview on the radio after too, seems like he's been through the mill and ready to make amends

Just an open question to people supporting Tinnion.

If he resigned would you take Louis Carey (played more games, coached youth extensively, failed as assistant at FGR) as his replacement.

    Thought not.

I get the point you make but it isn't like for like

Tins has worked his nuts off for the club, grafted with the academy and has been promoted (rightly or wrongly) to a level which the club feels he deserves - that is the key point

For Tins to get blamed for that is wrong, that is the clubs fault

I personally think he deserves a bit more respect and some clubs would kill for someone as dedicated to their club as Tins has been for us

Ultimately you’ll never know so you have to look at logic.

Tinnion was the most senior “football” man in the organisation. For Jon Lansdown not to have consulted him would have been odd in the extreme bearing that in mind.

However, it is nonetheless plausible that Tinnion was consulted but Lansdown didn’t agree with him on the biggest footballing decision at the club.

But - using logic - if that were the case, and Tinnion didn’t agree with the board strategy, why would the board then expand Tinnions role to make him more important in delivering that strategy. That wouldn’t happen in any organisation as it would naturally lead to conflict, which was one of the issues with NP. That point is further relevant as Tinnion appears to be under qualified for the “growing into CEO” position and no business would appoint someone who both didn’t agree with the strategy and didn’t have experience of delivering the new role!

So your answer which passes logic is that even though the final say was with Jon Lansdown, Brian Tinnion had to support the decisions to justify his expanded role. Any other reading is blinkered in wanting to support Tinnion.

I don't disagree with you - like you say, lots of unknowns

I think what you are talking about is perhaps a moral dilemma for Tins

If Jon comes to Tins and says, look we're thinking about letting Nige go, we want you to step up (blow smoke up his arse) - what do we expect Tins to do?  Morally I understand the point that Tins should have said woah hang on I don't agree with this, but the choice may have been between Nige's job or his own - I think to include Tins in the blame is a bit short sighted personally but I get the moral angle

Tins, you would think, is not indispensable himself so perhaps it is just the structure that he fits into (at the moment)

I can answer that, with something I posted on the Finn Azaz thread on the transfer forum.

You may notice that we appear to have been in for Azaz - which I’m pleased about, very good player. However, to be in for Azaz, and as rumoured Twine, we appear to have money to spend. That money came from Scott being sold. That money came from the work Pearson did. And if Jon Lansdown wanted to sack Nigel Pearson, with the input of his technical director Brian Tinnion, I can accept that. As we’ve been told, it’s their club.

But what I can’t accept, and what no city fan should accept, is wilful sabotage of this season because they didn’t like the manager and didn’t have the balls to sack him in the summer. So they said there were no funds, we ran on fumes for half a season then magically funds became available having not been generated since the point we were told there were none.

He lied to you. He was part of a wilful sabotage of our chances this season. So I’ll be judgemental of our “club legend”. Because if he cared about Bristol City Football Club he wouldn’t have been complicit in this shitshow.

I think this is a very valid post, pretty much spot on

I'm not defending anyone, perhaps more devils advocate, but what say would Tins have had in the decision to not grant Nige transfer funds and ultimately, influence his sacking?  Genuinely curious

  10. Did Bournemouth ever launch an appeal against their relegation in 19/20 after the Villa 'error' which would have meant they were relegated instead?

    Blinking despise Villa too

With regards the FFP and Man City in particular, I wonder if there is enough external pressure from fans alike that means that if they are found guilty, they will have to apply a Everton style points deduction

But how many windows will it take to get a team that's capable of playing his way, especially as we don't splash the cash as we did in the LJ days.

I don't see anymore of our players going for big fees like the last 5 years so makes it harder unless it's frees or loans.

Yeah I agree and I think we'll be in the loan market - not sure who our highest value player is now. Knight/Conway maybe?

  12. Listen to the gaffer after the game - team/players still very much in a learning phase and the reality is that the players we have probably aren't good enough for what he wants to do - hopefully January will change some of that - there will be ups and downs before it all clicks I expect

That said couple of shockers today:

    - Weimann out wide which has, and will, never work

    - Matty James starting with Williams, only one of those two starts for me

    - Tommy playing up top on his own, basically getting little boy'd by two giants, us not really getting near him or trying to provide any service to him

I thought both teams played in a very, very similar way today, both press high, both play out from the back and both had some tidy footballers - they were just marginally better than us at it

  13. Think the issue today was the lack of movement from the midfield and forward lines to open the space to pass into

Frustrating to see the ball being recycled so often but it's better to hang onto it than lump a hopeful ball forward to lose

Felt sorry for Tommy today, thankless task against two battering ram centre backs

New blood needed in the window

  14. That's what it'll be - I think TC from the bench is what I would do though

Williams can't play 3 games in a row he'll dissolve, so agree with James

He's been chucking Belly out on the right and he can't rest Sykesy for him

Disappointing performance for me & a huge lost opportunity for a rare win at St Andrews. Just watched the Menehti headers back & two great chances that have to be taken.  We moved the ball too slow to which Vyner was constantly moaning about which is good to see.  Williams was superb and mom by a mile for me.  Thought TGH was poor as slowed it down & caught on the ball.  As others have said it’s a point gained but they were there for the taking & their fans would have made it toxic if we had scored.  Thought Bell looked good when he came on and played a brilliant ball across 6 yard box.

Im not sure how many of Blues team played at the Gate but what a contrast in the two games I’ve seen them in.  If we could nick one from them then I’d have Bacuna all day long as quick, strong and technically very good.

    Agreed, very good summary

Bacuna always feel like one of those players that will make something happen, I get the impression that he is either excellent or pony

  16. Was interesting to hear Williams mention the pitch because to the naked eye it looked like a poor surface

Definitely take the point at a place historically we don't tend to do too well - we lost 3 zip here last year and that was when Nige had a meltdown (rightly so) and I think it may have been Massengos last game
