Guest uncle john Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Mate of mine's a Palace fan. Both our clubs have made it. He said to me 'I wanted City to win before, but now that you're playing the Seaweeds, I really want you to win,' Apparently Brighton are Palace's biggest rivals.
elko Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Yeah that's right. It's a bit of an odd rivalry really though, it's like 30 miles or something.
munchkjn Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Pedant alert... 54 miles from london to Brighton. Not as odd as our 125 mile rivalry with the pasty munchers. 40 mile rivalries with Swindon and Cardiff seem quite close in comparison.
elko Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Our rivalry with Plymouth is not that serious with it though is it? I mean, when they are not in our league, no-one really gives a toss about them. The key issue this year has been that we have been challenging with promotion for us.
CiderEagle Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Palace ARE the nearest league club to Brighton, but Brighton are not the nearest clube to Palace. The big Palace v Brighton rivalry goes back at least to the seventies when both clubs were in the old Division Three and pretty well matched. Games between the two sides regularly drew huge crowds. I swear Brighton came by the "Seagulls" nickname as a retort to Palace's "Eagles" . The clubs seemed to follow each other up and down the divisions for a while, so the rivalry was an even one, although it has fallen away in recent years. Highlights included a game in the eighties in which 5 penalties were awarded (four to Palace who missed them ALL !) Recommended songs to wind them up: "Glad All Over " (Palce anthem) 5-0, we beat the scum 5-0 (the last time the teams played at Selhurst)
Guest nobby Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 they do indeed hate each other. looks like there could be a fair bit of scrapping between all the sets of fans next weekend!!!!!!!!
