Guest Harry May Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Over the past few years , the media and marketing people have tried to sanitise football. To make it "wholesome" and "marketable" . Now while this may appeal to the armchair supporting premier league bloke with his sky season ticket , it does n't appeal to me . That may seem illogical , but where is the logic in going to Layer Road to watch us lose 4-0 ? Or Saltergate to see us cheated and lose 2-0 ? Or any other long away trip that ends in tears , for that matter. Football , for me , is about passion and about giving a t055, about being in the black pit of despair and then feeling elated. About being so bleeding happy when we win.And so down when we lose. I thought people like me were in the minority. After Wednesday night , all I can say is the death of the real genuine football fan has been wrongly reported. At The Gate , there were over 18,000 of them . Unbelievable. It was like a time tunnel appeared at The Gate , whisking us back to the '70s . That was what it reminded me of. The intensity , passion and spirit was not of this era . The best football experience I have had for probably 20 years ? I think so. Pure Mad as hell excellence. Caldicot Red.
Gerry Gows' Tash Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Too right mate, it's not every day that I hug complete strangers. That will go down as a legendary night at the Gate.
Guest goatinho Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Good shout, however beating the Gas 1-0 with Donowa's injury time goal will always be special to me, specially with Leaning saving Holloway's penalty with 15 minutes to go...
Dave L Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 The best football experience I have had for probably 20 years ? I think so. Pure Mad as hell excellence. Caldicot Red. From despair to rapture in the blink of an eye. A red mist forming over my eyes when Goodfellow's header went in. Hugging strangers when Roberts scored the winner. The bloke in front of me turning round with an expression of astonishment, joy and almost orgasmic glee. Danny Coles sprinting the length of the pitch, yowling at the Williams stand. Tommy Doc doing the same to the Atyeo. The Dolman stand swaying under my feet, or was it just me, swaying with the emotion of it all. Tears of joy and ecstacy. Floating out of the ground, wanting to hug everyone I saw. I tried to text a mate but my hands wouldn't stop shaking. A whole season's worth of tension bursting out of a bottle as 18,000 corks exploded around Aston Gate. Tears in my eyes as I write this. It was fantastic, unforgettable, cathartic. And I was there.
Gerry Gows' Tash Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Blimey mate that was poetry - steady on or you'll have me in tears. You HAD to be there, words can't explain it
Squeak Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 It was fantastic, unforgettable, cathartic. And I was there. Agreed. I can remember shouting to my mate, after our second goal "LOOK AT THAT" and then spreading my arms to emphasise......the whole ground was going mental. The Atyeo was dancing, the Dolman was shaking and the Williams was just going mad! A big frothing red sea of fans celebrating one of the best moments of ashton gate. something i'll never forget...we were talking afterwards about all the emotional scenes that you sometimes see on sky sports or the news...but we didnt watch it on tv...(like you said) WE WERE THERE!!
tin Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Anyone who's seen the film Road Trip will now what I mean. A guy on the pitch turned to me said that the feeling that gave us all was better than 'milking his prostate'! So funny, I cracked up, class! He was soooo right!
Godzilla Posted May 21, 2004 Posted May 21, 2004 Words just can't describe what it was really like, you had to be there to understand. The grin on my Maths Tutors face (A big Rushden fan) as I tried to explain the way Ashton Gate completely exploded kind of said it all. It was unbelievable. After spending the the 25 minutes between their opener and our equaliser, thinking, it's just not meant to happen. Thinking it's just slipping away from us all over again. Memories of Cardiff have never truely been put to bed, and now they've been resurrected in one horrible nightmare. A whole season of tummy churning as a good chance is missed by the opposition. A whole season of frustration at not taking good chances, and not beating rubbish opposition. A whole season of so much hope and expectation falling flat. A whole season spent travelling to every **** hole in the division thinking, why the hell am I doing this? That whole season of emotion just seemed to come out in 10 minutes of complete elation and surprise. The moment was for us. Amazing, just absolutely amazing.
