Why Something Will Have To Change

Taking a look at the side that started on Saturday I wondered what would happen if that side played in all 46 games. So who would get the goals in a 46 game season?

Spence

Wilson

Nyatanga

McGivern

Say they'll get one each = FOUR

JCR - THREE (Generous)

Kilkenny - TWO

Elliott - SIX

Skuse - TWO (Very Generous 1 last year)

Albert - SIX?

That gives us a sub-total of an optimistic 23 from our defenders and midfielders. The average number of goals scored by the Play-Off teams last season was 73. Which means (you are probably ahead of me here) that Nicky needs to bag a mere 50 this season if we are to make the Play Offs - unless Jamo weighs in with 17 perhaps!

More worrying is that the average number of goals scored by the relegated clubs was 47 meaning Nicky would need 24 just to match those relegated clubs.

Nothing scientific about this but I can't see anyone emerging from the current squad having a season like Scott Murray and coming to our rescue. Sooner or later the formation has to change - we don't have the midfield players capable of making it work.

That's all pretty consistent with last year, and we've still got Maynard, Pitman and Stead, so what more do you want? The only player who scored goals las season which might be missed is David Clarkson, but he was scoring when Maynard was injured, so having Maynard fit more than fills that gap. The issue for me is not who is going to score the goals, but who is going to create the chances

Last season:

McAllister 1

Elliott 8

Stewart 1

Skuse 1

Clarkson 7

Adomah 5

Cambell Rice 2

Johnson 1

Stead 9

Pitman 13

Haynes 1

Caulker 2

Keogh 1

Maynard 6

This may not be very scientific as you say but sometimes the blindingly obvious is just staring you in the face and you don't need all your fancy computer programmes to see it. Many of us have been calling for Millen to play two up front for some time and without goals we are going down, make no mistake.

As a follow up to your figures here are some more. If each of that starting line-up were to play in all 46 games, and to have their best ever seasons, figures taken from the official site, we would score a grand total of 50 goals. Many of these 'best ever' seasons were of course in lower divisions.

Not starting-Stead, Pitman, Clarkson, Taylor, Woolford, Bolasie. These six players alone have a 'best ever' total of 87 goals. Admittedly not very scientific but it speaks volumes about the way we are approaching the game at the moment. A virtually impotent midfield trio and only one guy, Maynard, who is likely to get you goals on a regular basis. For goodness' sake Keith get your head out of that computer you are reported to be using. We don't need to know who successfully completes the most passes and all that tosh. We need guys on the pitch who can stick the ball in the back of the net.

Well this is the problem isn't it. It looks to me as Millen isn't even confident in us scored so sets the team up for counter-attacking football. We try not to conceed and steal a goal if we can. Its the sort of football I hate. Let's try and soak up as much pressure as we can and try and score on the break.

When a team does it well - its great - But we dont do it well....

we remind me of all those teams that used to come to ashton gate just to sit with men behind the ball.now we are playing like that and we are at home .i used to hate watching teams come to sit with men defending deep and just frustrating us,now thats all we seem to do and you can just feel the frustration. which is now turning to anger and just turns people away from wanting to go as the gates are now showing . good luck mr millen your formation will gain you the sack which you truly deserve
