hippy273 Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 Bearing in mind 3 managers have brought in 30+ players and knowingly we have to sell before we can buy. Is this a tempting offer for any other manager currently? who would take us on with a squad of players they cannot build because it is too full already? Or could this mean we will be stuck with Millen for longer than expected. Will Lansdown agree to back our finances if the stadium gets the go ahead? the debts are forever going up and up. We could be stuck with Millen for a while, thoughts?
Cornacix the Druid Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 I think we are tempting. A championship side, our players are actually half decent at this level. With the prospect of a new stadium in 2078 (as previous poster mentioned), and possible financial backing....... at the end of the year. I think the brief to a potential new manager would be: Challenge - Keep us in the championship this year with the playing staff we have with maybe additional loan help. Reward - With up to 12 players out the door at the end of this season you will have basically a clean slate to build and we'll back you from there.

With so many contracts up in the summer the new man (if & when etc) will have plenty of room for changes
eskay Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 And there is the key point. With so many contracts up in the summer the new man (if & when etc) will have plenty of room for changes How are we going to afford all of the transfer fees for these new players? They won't all be on frees.

I wouldn't be surprised if Lansdown agrees to back us with the exception of the stadium being built, he won't put his hands in his pockets until he guarantees his money back.

That's for the board to decide. Either way, we're going to have a lot of players out of contract and we'll have to replace at least some of them. Pity we didn't get the maynard cash, although there is January.
Red-Robbo Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 How are we going to afford all of the transfer fees for these new players? They won't all be on frees. I think that's where Lansdown comes in. He hasn't said he is never going to finance a good purchase again, just that he's stepping back from day-to-day running of the club and wants more financial stability. The offloading of some expensive dead wood helps there. I think, we are an attractive proposition for a potential manager. The first 70 minutes of last night shows what can be done. there are some really good players here, but they are underachieving, partly due to poor coaching, crass tactical errors and being asked to do the wrong thing but also because of the general 'meh' attitude of the grey, dull, uninspiring Millen regime. We are also situated - as has been stated here dozens of times in the past - located in an area that has underachieved in football since the 70s. There is a massive potential for a really successful manager to build up the fanbase and really make a name for himself. Also, we have a main shareholder who is a genuine fan, and is worth a bit as well.

I was coming more from the point of view of wages that will be saved, getting in players we want to see, not the dross we currently have on the books Transfer fees.....lets hope SL can help out there, or we're still screwed!
Murraysrightplum Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 We have a good squad of players (whatever people might say). I'd be confident that we could attract a good quality manager. Whether we'd pay for one is another question. I expect a good bit of investment from SL in the summer (assuming we stay up and assuming the stadium is on the horizon)
David Brent Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 We have the best squad of individual players since we have been in this league. IMO. However, Millen was number two choice behind Coppell wasn't he? Who actually applied before Coppell got it? Would Jones or Davies or any other name suggested on here be tempted by the job. I seriously doubt it.
Guest Dave Youell Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 If you consider that say for the likes of Hunt who recieves 12k a week, that's £600k+ off the books. We could potentially turn 12 average player salaries into 4/5 decent signings, catching guys on a free and offering them more than we've been able to this window, as we have appeared to lose out quite a few players to rivals. Money talks.
cityfan Posted September 28, 2011 Posted September 28, 2011 There was only one manager we should have had when Johnleft and that was Neil Warnock. Proven, proven, proven, time and time again Too late now, but a group of us at the ground were saying that was who we should go for Simply put, as a manager, he offered us the best chance of getting into the Premier League based on his record.
