my full support for our new management team WELCOME TO BRISTOL CITY FC .......... but i would sooner stick red hot pins in my eyes and wash my cock in acid than sing some other national anthem :englandsmile4wf:

You're in some club somewhere in Arbroath with a bunch of Navy mates having a good night, consuming vast amounts of 'Heavy', the lights go on for the last song, which is... No, not You'll never walk alone, but...........'Flower of Scotland'. The locals look around for those that don't know the words...........

Those people are probably.....

SASSONACHS....... Word used in the English spoken in Scotland, which is directly from the Scottish(Gaelic) language. Sassanach literally meaning Saxon. This originally meant an Englishman.

Still break out in a sweat when I hear it to this day!

Would rather sing that than our painful 'national' anthem...

And that is exactly why there is no pride in this country anymore, people who would rather sing another countries national anthem than their own. Attitudes like this make me feel embarrassed to be an Englishman. Yes it maybe a little dreary but it is ours. Sing it loud sing it proud.

You talk about being embarrassed to be an Englishman but our national anthem is part of the reason I myself am embarrassed to be an Englishman.

Most national anthems are self promoting, past glories over others etc etc. Difference most other countries do not fawn and pamper do gooders concerning there past and don't let the words concern them.. They like their country and are patriotic and sing the national anthem with gusto.

Nothing wrong with being proud of your country, although in todays world some people seem to think it is racist. Which is absurd.

It's not that, it's just that I am not Christian and not a royalist so therefore, the national anthem has no representation of me (and many others) whatsoever.

The purpose of a national anthem is to bring together a country through the medium song, ours simply can't do that as it ignores so many areas of our society. For example, how is a Muslim in this country able to feel any sense of identity through our national anthem?

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your country, it's just that the line between patriotism and nationalism is often blurred.

Great song and good to fun to sing -why not?

Great song? It's a dreadful dirge, no doubt unless you're Scottish of course.

We won't sing it because we're not Scottish.

We're English and many of us are proud of that, and our National Anthem.

The same can be said of all anthems. If I were to resettle in Pakistan, or Syria, Australia, south Africa, anywhere, I would have to make the choice am I a brit abroad or a national of the country I was living in.

The national anthem is more than the sum of its words, it is part of the Identity. You are either english through birth or choice. Or you choose to be a person who lives in the country who only wants to take on part or none of the indentity of being english.

I guess it comes down to choice like you have made, but to sing another countries national anthem instead of ours seems plain wrong to me.

This is a good point. I lived and worked abroad for 9 years. I left a Brit but came back an Englishman. There is a lot of anti- English sentiment amongst non English ex-pats. I remember the Eng v Scot Euro playoff.... I got called all names under the son for singing my anthem loudly and proudly followed by the compulsory "Come on England" at the end.

The Scots celebrate, Burns Night and St Andrew's Day, the Welsh St David's Day and of course the Irish St Patrick's Day with a large party with an appropriate ethnic feel to it. The only time St George's Day was celebrated the British Ambassador (An Englishman!!) held a drinks reception. The invite said on St George's day at 7.30pm at...... People rang up and said what date is it on... The response from the Embassy was, " If you don't know you're not invited!!!"

Back to the point - I did learn the national anthems of the countries I lived in (Had to sing one of them everyday before work!!) and married a lady from another so have learnt that one and would sing it if necessary but not when they (Azerbaijan) played England as they did a while ago....

Don't think "Flower of Scotland" is appropriate for the Gate. It might be misconstrued..... There are plenty more songs out there.

A fitting Bristol City / Scotland musical tribute would surely have to involve our very own Scottish Wurzel, Tommy Banner. Get him down Ashton Gate with his accordeon (along with Pete Budd) and get him to do a Wurzels / Scotland fusion of some sort. At the end of one of the live versions of a Wurzels song (can't remember which) I've heard him segue into Scotland the Brave*.

Tommy is Scottish, a Wurzel and a City fan.

* Or something like that...
