bywaterred
It's not fair on the others. They will Do they hard work to start with then this bell end will instantly get his place back in the team and one of the boys that have done the hard work will get dropped. Plus the fact he will proberbly get sent off when he comes back. Leave him in England. Waste of a squad place. He's had his chance
Pezo
He may not be on fire at the moment, but we need a in form Rooney if we want to do anything in the Euro's. I admire you optimism but but even if Rooney had the tournament of his life which made Maradona in 86 look like an amateur we still wouldn't do anything in the euros - its not the players fault, they are so massively over hyped by the press to sell papers and then crucified to sell papers. He would of went either way he is our best player, Wilshire has just been speaking about him on Talksport he said he is without doubt our best player, he is on a different wave length to other England players, it's all about op ion i guess. Scoring goals against Jamaica with the England team supporting you is easy. All he offers is height, therefore he's perfect for Stoke, not for England. glynriley
The fact this is even being discussed , tells you all you need to know about Rooney. He is petulant and a liability in big games. Getting himself sent off against Montenegro was disgraceful and he will have to deal with far better and more experienced international defenders if we progress in the tournament. The Euro 2004 championship is the only tournament he has produced at , and that was when he was an unknown quantity. 2006 World cup , sent off v Portugal, let himself and the country down & World cup 2010 , awful (as were everyone). He's a great player on his day , but as I have said , his petulance is a huge down side and I wouldn't be surprised if he lets his country down again. Esmond Million's Bung
He may not be on fire at the moment, but we need a in form Rooney if we want to do anything in the Euro's. Come on Redcliffe this is England we are talking about basically the nucleus of the same couldn't give a toss losers we have been lumbered with for the past 10 years, do you really expect a different outcome than we have been served up with in the past and as for Rooney he was dreadful again last night, his miss was a Baz Savage/Lily Savage moment although both of those might have at least got it on target and Robbie Savage would have waltzed it into the net, the only good thing Rooney did last night was not to get sent off and **** up his chances of having his euro ban shortened. The good news is it won't be their fault, having their base in Poland whilst playing in Ukraine, the dear old FA have already given the darlings an excuse before a ball is kicked. TRL
Are the euros in September? I thought not, a complete waste of a plane ticket. Over hyped average striker. If the euros get moved to September he maybe worth a ticket.
Craven arms
One of the most over rated players I've ever seen, this is seriously bad news for England, this is going to keep other top class forwards out of the side, maybe the Irish can have him back if he shows off that lovely Celtic tat he got on his arm........ BcfcMc
There was nothing class about his miss from 5 yards last night, somehow spinning the ball backwards, 1 of englands best players but no chance of being 1 of the best in the world. David Brent
I don't get why the ban was reduced. How could anyone defend what he did? It was 3 game ban for a reason.
Coxy27
I don't get why the ban was reduced. How could anyone defend what he did? It was 3 game ban for a reason. It was reduced because UEFA's rules aren't the same as those set out by the English FA. Their rules state that any red card carries a one match ban, and that extra matches can be added to the ban dependent upon the severity of the players offence. Initially the deemed the kick to be sever enough to merit two further games, and England had a right to appeal as they saw it differently. Even now Rooney has been given an extra game for sure to make it two, and a further game suspended ban, which seems fair to me. The kick was petulant, but it wasn't overly malicious or anything. I think the appeal has warranted a fair outcome.
chipdawg
Interesting stat Percentage of games won with Rooney in and out of the side for England With Rooney 60.3% Without Rooney 71% That's fairly meaningless without context; a better stat would be competitive games since he's been an England player While I agree he's overrated by many in this country, he's still out best forward. If we beat France and Sweden and play scintillating football doing it, I really hope Rooney is left on the bench. If we need to win our final game and it hasn't worked for us in the previous 2 games, which England player would you rather have to come into the team? Must try a lot bloody harder. Your report card for the reporting of meaningless statistics or his for being poor in major tournaments?! He has been pretty poor in major tournaments, I think even his strongest supporters would admit that. Having said that, he wasn't fully fit going in to the last world cup and wasn't he carrying an injury prior to 2006 as well? Regardless, I think he owes England some form next summer (presuming he keeps his metatarsals safe)
Alex_BCFC
I would have taken him even if it was a 3 game ban because we just don't have many players with his ability in that position. Sure he goes through bad patches but get him on form and he is one of the best and would help our cause.

I very much suspect his scoring ratio is better in Friendlies than Tournaments or Qualifying. But don't take that as fact. I just don't rate him, and I think England as a team play better without him. With him in the side we wait tfor him to make things happen, when he isn't other players step up to the mark. I honestly believe we would be better with out him period.

Successive England managers have failed to come up with a 'plan B' and so if 'give it to Wayne' doesn't work we're stuffed. We need someone to come in and play to the strengths of the players available, rather than comic up with half-cocked formations just to fit Lampard, Gerrard and Rooney in . I'd love to see us play this summer with a front 3 of Young, Rooney and Sturridge, with Wilshere, Parker and A N Other in midfield. In Rooney's absence perhaps Sturridge up front and Walcot on the wing?

I wouldn't mind seeing Johnson from Man City given a run. To be honest I am a big fan of Bent, I know he doesn't do much in terms of alround game, but anyone who could play upfront for Charlton for 2 or 3 seasons in the prem and regulary bang in 20 goals, and has banged in goasl at a cracking strike rate everywhwee he has been including playing upfront by himself will do me. he has started scoring for England as well now. I don't think he gets the credit he deserves, but He is very one dimensional, is that what is need at international level? I don't know. I do however think he should be given a chance to lead the line.

I also rate Adam Johnson, though I guess he's not really playing regularly enough for Man City to justify inclusion over the likes of Young, Srurridge and Walcot (or even Downing). Would definitely take him though Bent is a funny one. His scoring record is excellent and his finishing is top notch, but as you point out, he does little else. I can't think of another forward for a 'top' nation these days who isn't either big and strong, creative and skilful, or both
