The hand of RO'D
This Derek Guy....hes A Bit Of Alright Isn't He? http://www.bcfc.co.u...2794958,00.html Come in and had a complete overhaul of staff right down to a new head coach at the academy. Welcome to BCFC Willie, I hope you manage to get something out of our youngsters!
mightyreds89
Looks like a good appointment. In recent years Celtic have done well at bringing in their own local based players into their first team to compliment the foreign stars they signed up. sglosbcfc
His brother Paul McStay was one of the best players that Celtic have had in their history. Willie wasn't in that class but was a decent enough player. He seems to have a good coaching CV so hopefully he will add to our coaching team in a very positive way. Although I don't wish to open up the old SPL v Championship argument again, he will be another person who knows what emerging talent there is in Scotland and may be able to divert some of it our way. Uncle Albert
So what are the chances that we're going to go in for Alan Thompson from Celtic now?!? Great appointment by DM, I think.
wilksy
It looks like a good appointment, lets be honest our Acedemy can't produce much less than it does currently. Great to see Alex Russell back too, for a relatively short career at City he seems to have a real affiliation with the club and fans.
Barrs Court Red
It's been long identified as the youth systems biggest failing - the transition between promising youngster to professional.
RedRock
Thought the Academy since its inception was an eye-watering waste of money/time. Far better invest in the scouting system and small transfer fees in 17-23 year olds from lower leagues. These players are (relatively) proven and hungry for success. A 1 in 5 'breakthrough' ratio would be attainable as opposed to about a 1 in 250 (if that) from the Academy. However, a couple of decent appointments and providing they can scout in the older age group more than happy with this development.

I would have thought a Scout's job entailed knowing about the best prospects in all age groups within his geographical area so that City might recruit them to academy or first team as appropriate. If this hasn't been the case perhaps that's where the problem lies?

BCAGFC
Think this is a really good appointment. As has been said elsewhere, Celtic had a good number of youth players progress into their first team recently, it also goes to prove what a shambles the previous Academy coaching set up was IMO. Also good to see Alex Russell back, he may have been lacking in stautre but he did have really good technical skills and should be able to pass that on. numbeast
If I were in the clubs position I would be looking at a cost efficient way of scouting kids football. The way I'd do this is by getting parents involved. How many City supporters have kids who play in the local leagues and how many of them would forward their observations and recommendations to the club if there was an apparatus in place to do so? Obviously there would need to be guidelines in place such as only "scouting" opposition players not those from your kids team, registering your willingness to act as a scout and maybe a few sessions of instruction in what to look for and how to record what you see etc. After a few weeks certain players and club names should keep reappearing. Then the club could send a youth scout to run the rule over them an invite those he believes have potential to a trial or to train with one of the youth coaches for a few weeks. Not only would this be a very useful, cheap resource but would give supporters a sense of belonging to the club. They could reward those "scouts" with a matchday package, like a meal drinks and platinum seating for a game. If it works then we see a better stamp of kids going through the academy, if it doesn't then the club hasn't lost a lot.
Bugben43
Top class appointment. And don't bother looking at his managerial stats, not inspiring. Great Academy lead for BCFC, better looking after a talent pipeline than managing a team.
