Lansdown Speaks...

With FFP coming in, the income we generate is not enough.

Described stadium situation as a fiasco.

A new stadium would turn 15k crowds into 25k crowds.

No point being in premier league without a stadium that would meet the requirements, but should still take the opportunity if it arises.

No questions from Twentyman re transfers.

Like we're going to be in the premier League

Face it. We're a backwater club. Lets just develop Ashton Gate to hold a decent 23000 and be happy to challenge in The championship

Most of the time I would not respond to such a defeatist post as this.

What shall we compete in the championship for?

To avoid relegation?

To stay in mid table?

To get in the play offs?

Get to the back of the queue young man, stay there until you fight your way to the front by kicking scratching and biting.

How the hell do you think the likes of Reading, Blackpool, Wigan, QPR, Norwich and many more got to the Premier League? I'll tell you shall I. They had ambition and a stomach for the fight, come back when you have it.

A tad unfair Rich as I know KB. This bloke loves our club and has held a ST for many years. Just a tad disillusioned with hearing the same cobblers from our leadership which I can understand TBH.

While SL wants to see promotion, the club needs his hand on the rudder more publicly as we (as fans) trust SL but his ways don't seem to be followed by the present incumbents who seem to want to blow smoke up their own arses re corporate finances.

maybe the new guys need to 'connect' with the support rather than just charging us for everything?

Not unfair at all. If you have low expectations and a defeatist attitude, you achieve little. It is not a personal attack on KB, merely pointing out the lack of positivity.

I do agree that we need to be informed from above a lot more and the respect for the board is diminishing.

Thrres is no way a stadium will turn 15k crowds into 25k crowds for longer than a couple of months without success on the pitch.

For a start we don't get 15k now!

a general rule is a new groud normally adds at least 5k to current gates,

ie Cardiff went from 14k a week to 22k a week

So about 17-18k

Is that sustainable? Honest question, I can't remember what the numbers were to break even.

alot more then the current ground,

You have to take into account that the new ground will have boxes for corprate guests which will work out on avg 2-4 million quid a season that we currently don't get,

The new ground will come with reduced running costs (prob about half of what it currently costs to run Ashton Gate)

then you will have additional fans through and more room for away fans so teams like leeds will be able to bring 4-5k instead of the 2-3k they currently bring

Where is the actual Chairman? Has he actually made any comment whatsoever since he took over? It seems like Dawe's appointment is a fix to allow Lansdown to run the club from his off shore tax haven. The club badly needs focus and leadership and all we have now is a muddle.

All of that is true, but how long before (last estimates) the 90 million for the stadium is paid off?

half of it is paid outright from the sale of Ashton Gate to sainsburys (if the new ground does appear) the other half will be paid back to lansdown over a time he deems suitable I expect at a very low intrest rate like his current loans to the club

We would assume that, but I haven't seen anything mentioned. Even at 1% or quater of 1%: if we are not breaking even, that is just extra debt.

I fear even with a brand new stadium, unless we are in the prem, we just won't break even. I just cannot see the appetite for bristol city with the bristol public.

Get to the prem, different kettle of fish, but I can't see it the way everything is heading any time soon.

It maybe fact, but it is time they started laying out plans for that eventuality. If av gets turned down flat. There is no point in having all your eggs in one basket.

If it does get turned down and we have to look at other land, how long will that take to come to fruition? It's all well and good putting our future in a pipe dream, but sooner or later you have to base the future on reality, not hope.

You can't run a business on hope.

I remember lansdown something on the lines of, if the stadium doesn't come off, then I am not sure I can take it any further. And it may be a time to let someone else have a go.

Now if that is the case, and not lansdown letting off steam, where will the money come from to re develop, or buy new land? And will Steve sell his assets in bcfc and the stadium company cheaply, to allow someone to invest enough to make it worth while?

There are too many ifs and buts surrounding the whole stadium situation, to make any of us confident in the way our future is heading at the moment.

The club want our money, our support, but are not giving us anything back at the moment.

They have lost my season ticket money through lack of clarity and other issues. And others I know of. In respect of the stadium, they cannot just keep quiet, like they do with players.

This is a massive issue, with potentially the future of the club at stake, so to keep it quiet from the fans is ludicrous.

if they announce a new plan for the ground thats admitting defeat on ashton vale isn't it, thats why nothing will be said until the new report from the inspectors, its not hard to work that out,

It seem 90% of people posting on this board at the moment wants the club to fail I don't get it, in times like this we should be backing the club to the hilt,

not qestioning free food vouchers ticket prices (which are at there cheapest since around 2004) and board room ambitions,

We might as well just tell the league to relegate us now it this is what the fanbase feel

The main thing is that debt associated with 'infrastructure' doesn't affect your FFP returns so presuming that the debt associated with it is all owed to SL, it should be entirely manageable

After that, as others have said, it will allow us to increase budgets on the playing side because a new stadium is cheaper to run and will more easily generate profits away from football. I think we need to accept that as fondly as we think of Ashton Gate, it doesn't provide the nicest experience to the part time fan who wants to bring his kids but doesn't enjoy the match day experience at the gate. We can argue about the soul of football and whether the club is forsaking it's loyal fans in pursuit of new ones, but we will struggle to elevate ourselves above where we are now without them. These part-time fans are looking for a premier league match day experience as much as premier league football- give them that and they'll come on a regular basis

As for the club being in turmoil? It appears from up north that the club is the most focused it's ever been with a manager who quickly identified the problems on the pitch (even if he's not quite sorted them yet) and a coaching set up designed to optimise our chances off the pitch. The stadium is a shambles caused more by the council than us and there is nothing that SL's personal fortune can do about new financial regulations. Look around the league and find me another club of a similar size and stature with a similarly small and limited ground that are spending big bucks. I'll wager you can't

Yes from a ffp point of view. But looking down the line, past lansdown. How attractive will it look. The only way a we will break even with a new ground is bums on seats. History dictates we only get the crowds talked about here on a constant basis when we are in the top division.

All the boxes external events etc etc will not make up for supporter apathy.

Top flight football on regular basis is what is needed to make the stadium earn its money, anything else, and it can be seen as a white elephant. Yes the losses will be a fair bit smaller because of the non football side, but a loss is still a loss it may help slightly on ffp, but that may not even be around by the time its built.

Yes but looking 'beyond Lansdown' as it stands, the club would be screwed without him underwriting us. I do agree that a new stadium alone does not bring riches and financial nirvana but it's really the only way towards a stable, succesful, top-level football club that I can see. Living in Manchester I know a lot of folk who chose to support Man Utd or (more so these days) Man City because of their success but rarely go because they can't afford it. When I ask why they don't go to watch Oldham or Stockport or Bury the answer is (aside from the fact that there isn't enough glory involved) that the stadium is rubbish or it's hard to park or that if it's raining and you sit in the wrong place you get soaked. All of these things are true at Ashton Gate and I presume would be considered for a new stadium. A shiny new stadium WILL put buns on seats and WILL increase revenue and from there the club would look to push on in a sustainable manner and achieve promotion. Of course the expenditure has a certain element of risk involved but I think not doing anything and hoping for the best is a far greater risk at the minute

PS I do agree with you though that the club should be a bit more transparent over the machinations associated with the stadium, but in defence I suspect that while it was an issue between the council and the nimbys, they refrained from comment on legal advice

I know I shouldn't bite but you do post some crap

1. the sale of AG to sainsburys brings in £20M - hardly half of £90M

2. SL doesn't have any outstanding loans to BCFC - he restructured the loan into equity (shares in BCFC) in order to releive the club of the burden of interest payments. He did this a few years ago. This means he gets nothing back he simply owns even more of the club %wise. If he was to sell the club he would of course make a profit from those shares - or indeed a loss - depending on the selling price.

I guess the timing has to be perfect, stadium and promotion at the same time.

I can't see us challenging for promotion anytime soon unfortunately. Maybe after a few years of ffp, and we retain our status in the champ.

I always look past lansdown unfortunately, you never know when something bad can happen. We rely too much on him.

Wrong TRL.. Monkeh is absolutely right.. common sense my friend. You do NOT, under any circumstances, reveal all of your cards especially to the TVG people. They would have a field day.. ooooh! hahahaa.

Of course the club have other options but this clearly is far and away the one that works best for all of the right reasons.

As for others commenting on the silence of the board while we have occasional words from the wise man; I'll take that arrangement everyday of the week if we hear from Steve Lansdown from time to time.

Not so sure, the club have spoken about the redevelopment to a small extent before, but have said it would cost a whole lot more. So tvg people know that already.

And of course, it will have no bearing on av, their gripe is not the stadium, but the land it is going on. Yes we know that is bs, but from a point of view of law, if we have other plans is irrelevant, their focus is on proving the land has been used for recreation for the past 20 years, not if we have plans to redevelop ag

I know other plans have been mooted and/or assumed by many and the TVGers are not dumplings. You miss the point a little because I refer to detail and official announcements about other plans being kept securely under wraps. Obviously casual discussions or comments made in debate are not the same. You seemed to suggest in your earlier post that City should go public with such plans and I have said that would be a huge error of judgement at this time. I stand by that remark.

It's not a gift or a loan - all the money he currently puts in is structured as equity - there's no repayment and no interest.

He only gains - or loses - if/when he sells those shares.

My guess is he'll gift the shares (at some point in the future) to his son to avoid paying IHT

I've never said go public with all of it.

I have said they should be telling us of a plan b. Because as stated above, if plan a doesn't come off Lansdown has publicly stated in the past, he would give up and hand over to someone who could move the club forward. He has also said he would see it through to the bitter end.

What that means I don't know, which one is the truth, I don't know. Two very mixed messages. And quite worrying you would imagine if av is dead in the water.

I prefer to look at it another way. Talented young manager who is having to rebuild the club from top to bottom, serious action being taken to meet FFP regulations that will ensure long term club survival, updated youth Academy, an owner willing to invest 100m of his own money to build a state of the art stadium and has not given up this desire despite some ridiculous obstacles put in place at every turn, and a squad that is slowly starting to resemble one that can survive well in this league. You see I do not see a shambles, but change. we all can have out own point of view.

Very good points and I hope you are right. I'm just intrigued by the Invisible Man, Keith Dawe. Has he ever spoken in public?
