Guest Anglia Red Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 If you look at our overall record this season it reads Played 8 Won 3 Drawn 3 Lost 2.I accept all the wins have come in the cups, but there is no doubt in my mind we are getting there.Of course it was disappointing to concede yet again from a set piece, but as an attacking unit we look dangerous!Thought Harewood did well on his full debut. The Sky commentators were praising our passing game in the first half-true we didn't play so well second half.Overall I think we are getting there and the first league win is surely just around the corner
Major Isewater Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Did n't see "Harwood' but Harewood impressed me

GodEmperor Palpatine Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 Noted and edited - Forgot it was the first day back at school! Nice to see a thread actually about the football rather than some 'war' that happened around BS3 last night... Yeah I agree, some our passing and movement 1st half was top notch. JET, Bryan and Reid were outstanding but thought Pack was the poorest player for us and looked sloppy... seemed really rattled 2nd half to. We were poor 2nd half but that's because the Gas players, hustled and closed us down better but overall we fully deserved the win! Shame we didn't put it out of sight that first 45min, that chip from Reid was audacious and deserved more.
Guest DancinDannyD Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 With your attacking options, you should score lots of goals this season. JET looks a class above League 1 and a great signing in my opinion - wouldn't be surprised if a Championship side comes knocking on your door in January. For the first half, we showed you far too much respect and stood off you, allowing you to get your passing game together - it was a very 'un-derby' like performance from us in the first half and your quality showed. I think to be successful in L1 this season you will need to shore up defensively. In the second half when we stood a yard further forward, started to challenge you on the ball and harass you a little I was surprised how easily and quickly we got on top for a significant period (if only we'd done that from the start!). With your squad and the talent you have available I think a play-off place is a realistic target this year - but a better team than Rovers (we were very limited up front last night) will expose that defensive frailty so I can fully understand that crazy scoreline at Coventry now - great going forward, always suspect at the back.

Fair assement. The 2 halves couldn't of been more different. Knew your lot would come out fighting 2nd half and it made a big difference. It was a good lesson to learn for our young side. They will need to be more composed and think a little quickier when being harried like that. In terms of defence, i think that will improve, bear in mind that unit had not played together before with 2 new players in there, so the problem is hopefully being addressed! Was good to watch a derby again, almost forgot what the "dont let the Gas score" feeling was like, likewise scoring a winner against you lot!

For once, I agree with almost all of your comments Daniel. You did show us too much respect in the first half - how Wardy could say, in his after match interview, that he was happy with his team's first half performance is beyond me. In the second half you challenged us further up the field, closed down the space and we capitulated. I think that so far, SO'D has had his hands full getting a new team of young players learning Plan A and there hasn't been time to learn how to change to a Plan B, C or D. That'll come, no doubt. Had we a Hartley type of player in midfield (probably in place of Pack) I think that we would have dealt with the second half threat you posed in a more accomplished fashion. We do still have defensive frailties, especially through the centre, and it will continue to cost us goals but at least we have the capability to score at the other end which should make for some high scoring, interesting games! Playoffs are just a fantasy for us this season - there are just too many young, inexperienced players learning their trade (which is fine by me) but next season will be a different story. I don't think that JET will be off any time soon. He's found out through his experience at Cardiff and Ipswich that it's better to be a fixture in a lower division team, where he's allowed and encouraged to find the ball and play his own game rather than be a bench-warmer for a higher placed team or spend his Saturday afternoons in a shopping mall. I think that the Gas should have a tidy season provided that you can get you squad fit and find a regular goalscorer, who can score 15+ goals because I don't think that Clarkson fits that role - he still looks a very ordinary player to me.
bearded_red Posted September 5, 2013 Posted September 5, 2013 I think the title of this thread sums us up perfectly at the moment. Getting there. In all of our games this season we have mixed some really good football in with some shocking periods of play (maybe with the exception of Palace where we performed for 90 minutes). As my mate said last night, 'when we're good we're very good, but when we're bad, my god we're bad'. As everyone knows we have a young and much changed squad and it will take time, but there has been more than enough this season to be quietly optimistic about. We will continue to struggle to find consistency (in one game let alone from week to week) but the signs, for me anyway, are positive. I'm confident that sooner or later we will play for 90 minutes how we have been playing for 20/30 minute periods and we will thrash someone. The defence still clearly needs work, but early impressions of the two new signings are positive and as we continue to improve in possession defending will become a lot easier. After all, the easiest way to defend is by having the ball yourself. Hopefully hanging on last night, however desperate it was at times, will also do us the world of good. I posted after the last two league games that we seem to not really know how to win a game, but hopefully the confidence we would have gained by doing the job yesterday could work wonders for us going forward.
