A Neutral View On Last Night

I'm a Rovers STH but I wouldn't say I'm a huge supporter, and I was in the away end last night. I've grown to like the club however it doesn't cloud my view in light of incidents last night. In my opinion an excellent game of football was spoilt by the ineptitude of a&s police as well as of course a few idiots.

Firstly, some Rovers fans attempts to get into the Williams were pathetic and unfortunately changed the tone of the evening. They arrived late and appeared to only be there to create trouble. This is of course ridiculous and I condemn it like any right minded Gashead or football fan.

On the pitch, Rovers were abject first half and the gap was clear, however I feel they did put in a performance to be proud of in the second half, although they lacked the cutting edge and ability to create clear cut chances that you did.

At the end, I felt that the policing led to the incidents which saw objects thrown and general disorder on and off the pitch. I was hit in the face by a coin and a bottle landed right next to me. Nearing the end of the match the riot police were in front of the Rovers' Eastend. Several of us told the police that some in the Dolman were readying a pitch invasion but they simply ignored us and left feeble pretection around the other sides of the ground in a few stewards. I'd also like to point out that the lad who ran on the pitch twice from the Dolman should've been swiftly dealt with, but he wasn't. The police and stewards were inconsistent and weak.

Finally, the people who invaded the pitch were completely pathetic. Of course I expected some sorts of taunting however throwing coins and bottles into an end with small children is disgraceful. Initially, the Rovers fans responded well by a chant of Irene however a few soon tarnished our reputation by ripping out seats and pelting coins back. I think that the poilce were at fault for not preventing the pitch invasion in the first place which grabbed the headlines instead of the good game of football which City won with two excellent goals.

I'd also like to add that although much of your Eastend are excellent, loud and proud, the ones who like to stand near the segregation and taunt away fans are largely twelve your old imbeciles with faces caked in acne. Overall a good night spoilt by the actions of absolute idiots from both sides of the City, compounded by lacklustre policing which only encouraged trouble

They're my local team. I support a different team and go when I can but it's much easier to get to Horfield than Ashton. I go because I love football, not because I love the gas

Understood. I never supported Reading and said that I wouldn't cross the street to see them play. I didn't need to - I lived six doors down from Elm Park ;)

I've always watched the local team when I've been away from Bristol, but without supporting them.

I almost wrote you off after the first sentence, but I was wrong. I agree with everything you wrote. It always seems to be the same. The derby acts like magnet to the moron elements all over the city whoever they support. And of course you're quite right about the East End kids.

You've crossed a line there fella :nono:

Haha, well some of it was last night at least! Every side does have idiots, the ones who ran into KFC shouting GHS didn't help, but inconsistent policing really annoyed me last night especially. A lad in yellow ran on from the Dolman both times you scored and both times he was escorted back to his seat. Awful from the police, after their 'zero tolerance policy'

I agree with everything you said. I think it was excellent atmosphere created by both sets of fans. Like you said Its a shame that the minority have to slightly spoil what was a real passionate and gripping Bristol derby!

I agree with your post bat this bit. A&S police should have had more police in the ground which is the fault of the inspectors and the like (or maybe the cuts). The PC's and sergeants who were around the EE could never have stopped the pitch invasion. They would have been spread too thinly. Then the idiots would have had no one between them and the rovers fans. I thought the police on the ground tonight did well. I know people said the horses were not being careful but when you've got about 1000 angry, drunk, adrenaline filled fans trying to get at each other on the pitch, whilst 17,000 people try to get out of the ground, mobolisation will be very difficult. I can only apologise for my fellow 'fans' and would also say that getting a ST for the gas is admirable as your local team, though not your actual team.

The guy in the yellow top spent more time on the pitch than Sam Baldock, if it was me then I would put in for appearance money.

It was all good spirits I felt, all in the build up around the stadium up until the mob walked in and that sparked it all off.

Good point. Their arrival changed the atmosphere. Why were they allowed in. I remember was it at Walsall many of our fans were refused admission after simply smelling of drink, I guess many of these were, couldn't they have been refused admission too? Maybe it was just easier to let them in and be contained than have them roaming around outside causing trouble?

And from what I saw I thought the fans on the pitch had a go at the Gas at the end but were beginning to dispurse when the horses came on, this seemed to make the situation flare up. And I thought on the whole the stewards who held the line in front of the eastend did really well, they didn't deserve to be coined etc and certainly weren't dressed for it like the robocops.

Walked by cross hands at seven, to find surrounded by police and police dogs, rovers supporters stood on benches shouting, and generally taunting police and any city fans who walked by, told by police lady stood there that they had been there drinking since about 3 o clock, and that they had to stop the traffic at one point because they started throwing beer glasses onto the road, why wasn't something done to stop this, didn't see anyone getting arrested, and they probably ended escorting them to the match and allowing them in, same with some of the people who earlier ran onto he pitch, why were they not arrested and carted off, instead of being allowed to climb back into the stand, saw one lad do this 2 or 3 times,so much for zero tolerance!

I watched the whole pitch invasion on YouTube. To begin with it appeared to be exuberant fans celebrating a good win. Then it turned ugly and disgraceful. The one I feel sorry for is the head groundsman. All that hard work by him and his team during the close season and then to have to watch 7 police horses charging up the pitch must have broken his heart!

... but a season ticket at Ashton Gate this season is/was cheaper - you only have yourself to blame....

Yes this was the mob who were marched in late, right past the Miners Arms which was packed, inside and out with some big ol' City lads, this was a flashpoint, but could have been a lot worse. Should have been rounded up and marched to the ground as soon as they started kicking off at the Cross Hands and terrorizing local, non-football residents. Heddlu did in Cardiff last season, shut the pub down and marched the whole lot to the ground early doors. I thought the police operation inside and outside the ground was weak all day. Anything to do with having a woman in charge?

Neutral my arse.........you attend rovers home games, you are a season ticket holder, you "have grown to like the club", but you distance yourself from any hostility on here by saying "im not a huge supporter", what a load of utter drivel you have just put there. By your own admission gash ***** started the trouble in the ground, and at pubs near the ground. so pahleeeease do not even try to take the moral high ground. And ill tell you something mate................ we like our spotty faced morons, so bore off gas!!

You say I've talked drivel and that I'm trying to avoid hostility. Well explain to me why a lot of City fans who share hatred for the Gas agreed with what I posted? I'm not a hostile person, but you're an absolute arsehole pal, I came on here to give a neutral and fair view on the events as I'd seen a lot of "they were worse than us" on both forums. I criticised the behaviour of the Rovers fans who attacked the Williams (a minority) as well as criticising the City fans who ran onto the pitch to taunt the away fans (also a minority.) I'm not arsed if people disagree but don't have a go at what I posted when you reply with a load of complete tosh.

If you can't see that I was being neutral then you're genuinely deluded.
