Sam Baldock And The Art Of The Long Punt

As I'm in the mood for getting things off my chest...

Sam Baldock. I don't know if its his fault or a deliberate tactic, but are we ever going to use him in any way other than chasing long punts into the gap between the defensive line and the keeper?

I'm pretty sick of seeing it. Surely there must be more to his general play than that. How do we use him properly? Why is it so difficult?

It is very frustrating. Today was probably the most it had happened since the opening day but that's not to say it has not happened in the games in between. Baldock is not a player without his faults in my eyes but in fairness to him he can't do much with having a long ball punted in the air at him. He's hardly ever going to win it and it's going to be lapped up by the CB every time. He is literally pointless when it comes to long balls.

Hell I wouldn't even mind seeing that - what we are actually doing is playing it to his current position expecting him to win the header/chest it down - it's laughable.

This is one of the major things annoying me right now and I hope SOD sorts it out quick. You can't play long balls to Baldock - he needs balls to chase down the flanks etc and get on the end of low crosses.

The excellent cross from Cunningham the first half, hit with tons of pace, low and arcing into the box, and then away from the keeper, around the 5 yard area with players running in... I had already started to stand thinking one of ours or a POSH player was going to get a touch and put it into the net.

True that was an excellent ball and the sort he should be there to put away.

We are not playing to Baldock's strengths.

That ball played in from the left was begging to be put into the net. We did not play in another decent cross until late on in the game. In addition to hoofing it, we tried to cross it from near the half way line which is hopeless.

The players should be told don't even bother trying to cross it until you are at least level with the penalty area. Everything is a waste of time. If you can't hit low, flat and fast from anywhere else (like Steven Gerrard) then don't bother.

We need to play it on the floor between the defenders for Baldock to run onto. His advantage against most central defenders is pace. Expecting him to win headers against them is an example of desperate hope against bleeding obvious reality!

I thought we didn't play with enough pace for baldock today. I thought both Jet and Maloney were guilty of taking an extra touch and slowing everything down too often rather than whipping in an early cross. Allowing defenders to get back in position, which led to a higher ball which baldock is never going to win.

As mentioned apart from Cunningham in the first half we didn't really whip the ball in when the defence was going back towards its own goal.
