that was more like 3-3-4?

yg9djjQ.jpgThis picture shows two formations, the first one shows what I saw today at the game and the second is what I believe the set up should have been.

In my view, there is really nothing wrong with 3-5-2 when your wing backs have a 'defend first' mentality but we pretty much played with a 3-3-4 formation for most of the game which is ridiculous and will never work at this level.

Today, the build up play was non existent because our wing backs are on the touch line every time far out wide and too far forward, pretty much out of the game unless someone hits those never successful diagonal long cross field balls.

I have also indicated in green the areas the two wing backs spent for 90 minutes, ultimately they were not involved in the game enough and ended up not really contributing much to all three facets attack, defence or even in the middle where we were always outnumbered. Those two wingbacks were not part of the midfield at all, Reading bossed the middle and that's why we did not create anything at all.

Don't get me wrong, we need to use the wings and it's not lost on me that many of our goals have come from great play out wide but we have to pick our moments. 3-5-2 can be a very sold formation but the way we are using it is not right, until this changes we will continue conceding bucketloads.

How can your LWB and RWB be in the same line as your strikers everytime you have possession? They are supposed to be at least 10 to 15 yards behind them so they can feed into the channels for Kodjia to latch on or crosses for Wilbs etc.

Whatever the formation was, it wasn't a proper 3-5-2. The defending from the wing backs, particularly Little, was often poor last season, but City got away with it as the team was in league 1. Life is far harder in the Championship.

We did have some width .... When the rcb and lcb decide to leave there defending positions and turn into wingers assisting the wingbacks ! It's suicidal in this league.

The 1st goal Williams was nowhere to be seen, this happened all game as per usual  . ayling wasn't great at wing back he then becomes more attacking when he went to  rcb well more like a wing back who starts his run from the back .....

Dont get me wrong rb and lbs can be great at assisting wingers....in a 442 but leaving flint at the back is just crazy ...with pack being the next further back neither of these have pace.  I thought earlier you don't see flint shout at his  fellow cbs to keep them accountable but now I realise they are barely even there to shout at.
