Season ends in disappointment , nothing new really. Two wins, four draws from the final nine games meant a poor 9th place finish to a season that promised much more.
Thorpe ended top scorer, never understood the hate for him , 23 (19 league) one high point..... the gAss relegated with 51 points.

OK @1960maaan2000-2001 memories. As always please feel free to correct factual errors.

At the end of June 2000 Danny Wilson was appointed as City's fifth manager in 18 months on an 18 month contract. As part of the deal, he agreed to keep the existing coaching staff rather than bring in his own men. Three years before he had guided unfashionable Barnsley into the premiership and then moved on to Sheffield Wednesday. City's side of the contract was signed by John Laycock as he was Chief Executive. Scott Davidson was still on the board, but only as a nominal director. The first full season of the 21st Century began with a 2-0 win at Wrexham, but then came four consecutive defeats and an early exit from the League Cup. City then went on a 15 match unbeaten spell beginning with a goal less draw at Oldham followed by a 1-0 win at Oxford. Had they lost, City would have been bottom of the division. Walsall had won every game so far, City went there and drew 0-0 only because a Walsall defender was able to make a goal line clearance. Three days later City drew 1-1 at Millwall who had been scoring 3 or 4 goals in each of their last few games. Free scoring Reading visited Ashton Gate and were beaten 4-0 with Louis Carey scoring his first goal after over 200 appearances. Tony Thorpe found his form and scored in most matches; against Bournemouth he notched a first half hat trick. lee peacock, a £300,000 signing from Manchester City, partnered him and scored some valuable goals. Against Peterborough he scored one of the finest goals ever seen at Ashton Gate. To defeat an offside trap, he sprinted from the half way line onto a long through ball and from outside the penalty area, picked his spot and shot past the keeper into the roof of the net. If either forward had to be substituted, Peter beadle was there to replace them giving no respite to the opponents. A 4-0 win against Notts County saw youngster Simon Clist score his first goal after just a few appearances and Tony Thorpe got his 100th in the same game. Brian Tinnion had moved to central midfield and was now supplying balls to both Scott Murray on the right and Mickey Bell  on the left wing with his accurate long passes. After a draw against table topping Wigan, both teams were applauded off the field by the Ashton Gate fans. City's formation was 3-5-2 with a very young back three comprising Joe Burnell, Louis Carey and Matthew Hill. At 23 Carey was the oldest and most experienced, yet City;'s defence was one of the tightest in the league. The run finally ended at Plymouth in the LDV Cup when four players made their first team debuts in  a team comprising a mixture of reserve and youth team players.

Four days later City returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over Kettering to progress to the FA Cup 3rd round. Brentford then visited and won 2-1 after Scott Murray had a goal disallowed, but they showed their resilience by winning away the following week. Apart from playing a neat, passing game, City had also concentrated on physical stamina and this provided dividends with winning or equalising goals scored in the last few minutes and in one case, seconds of a string of games throughout January and early February 2001. In the middle of that month, a slip occurred with three defeats in eight days at Leicester in the FA Cup 5th round, at Brentford when Scott Partridge scored the winner against his former club and worst of all at Colchester 4-0. Until that week, the defence had only conceded ten goals in away league matches. City were still placed 7th and a play off position was still in contention as 6th placed Stoke were only three points ahead and 5th placed Reading only three ahead of them. City now hit a purple patch and beat Millwall the leaders 2-1 and a week later won 3-1 at Reading. The Millwall fans rioted in Bristol and damaged the visitor's stand. The players smashed up their changing room ceiling. City were still 7th at the end of March and remained in contention for a play off place. However, three consecutive defeats in mid April ended that hope. Toward the end of the season lee Matthews had been signed from Leeds United and had made an immediate impact scoring in the games against Millwall and Reading. Another useful acquisition in March had been Neil Maddison on loan. He also scored a few goals during his stay. The final game was at Wigan who needed a win to secure automatic  promotion. The game was goal less due to Steve Phillips having the game of his life for City.

1999-2000 Rovers were 7th, City 9th. 2000-2001 City were 9th again, whilst Rivers as you say, were relegated having finished 21st.
