headhunter Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I was just watching an England greatest goals compilation CD which featured Teddy Sherringham scoring and setting up a few with the style that has attracted Tins to Steve Howard. Is he still playing or did he retire from Pompey at theend of the season ? What a figurehead he would be for our young strikers to learn from if only for one season. Tins could also let him do some coaching - he's already said he will use all coaches at his disposal to help the 1st team squad by bringing their specialist skills in [ie Taylor for heading, Walsh for crossing]. Last season we had the luxury of a goalkeeping coach so why not one this year for the forwards. Sherringham would sell a few more season tickets too. How much would he cost ? Well if he's doing nothing right now might he be tempted for say £8000 per week ? So what is it to be Howard for a fee of £350000 and £2500 per week or Sherringham - for one year the cost is the same and I'm sure he would make a difference at this level. I can see it now 4.45 PM, 7 May 2005 at Hillsborough : Murray crosses Sherringham heads it down Lita / Gillespie / Heffernan [take your pick] blastS the ball into the net ..... IT'S 1-0 City and the League 1 title is theirs !!!!! [Just one fly in the ointment to that dream, I think Tins might feel threatened by having that big a personality in his squad]
Pewsham Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 £8 grand a week? Steve Lansdown would choke on his bacon and eggs this morning

Guest lnichols Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 £8 grand a week? Steve Lansdown would choke on his bacon and eggs this morning ← i have to agree. steve would never have that kind of money spent on a players wages, we have to bear in mind how much money we do have to spend.
headhunter Posted July 11, 2004 Author Posted July 11, 2004 Yes, £8000 per week busts the wage structure but you are paying for quality. As an alternative you could give him a £100000 signing on fee, pay him £4000 per week [same as that idler Matthews was on ; most expensvie wage cost -FACT] and £5000 per goal / £2500 per assist - over a year that would still not cost anymore than Howard and you are building in a performance element of pay. What is Sherringham's current status - I do have a feeling he has retired ; does anyone know ?
Lita For Congo Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Matthews wasnt on £4k a week, nor would Howard be on £2.5k.
Tipps Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Makes you wonder why Carey is unhappy about players coming in on more money doesn't it!! Imagine what the rest of the squad would think if Mr Bigtime Charlie came in on that stack of dosh!!
jimmyb Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 Irrespective of the cost i think the chances of tempting teddy and his fleet of ferraris down the M4 out of london are zilch - a big fat zero.

I think he is a bit too good for our level. Would like to see him, but wouldn't want him earning anymore than the local lads
kiwicolin Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 would upset too many of the players there and our new signings.don't need the agro
Pewsham Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 The bit thats missing from the maths is the sell on fee. With Sheringham it's a GUARANTEED nil! At least if Howard had to go, we may get tuppence ha'penny for him
headhunter Posted July 11, 2004 Author Posted July 11, 2004 "but wouldn't want him earning anymore than the local lads" With a reply like that you must be a socialist ! What your saying suggests a surgeon should earn the same as a nurse or a Sales Director the same as a Sales Administrator. All football clubs have wage disparities - it's a fact of life ! With the type of pay structure I put forward if he doesn't do the job at the level we are expecting him to then he earns no more than some of our under achievers. If he scored 15 and made 15 then it would be money well spent
Rich-TWSC- Posted July 11, 2004 Posted July 11, 2004 I still don't know why you can't just say ###### experience etc and just be happy with what you've got up front? Alot of you blamed PeaCOCK for not getting you one extra point, he's gone. A proven goalscorer has come in that will make the difference you crave oh-so-much surely? If I had an experienced player in my squad I'd prefer him in my defence or midfield.
lotusman Posted July 12, 2004 Posted July 12, 2004 Sherringham ,will become player/manager at x,y,w,z, before the season is over.
