Guest john shaw number 1 Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Yes the score was different but the way the game went the same way as last season City should have been 3-1 up ht, 0-0 last year 1-1 this year, stupid goal to give away in 2nd half, Bobby missed a sitter from same spot, we hit the post/ bar and all over them in the last 10 mins and still don't get the pts we should have had, the only difference between last season and this season was instead of buying players blues have invested in rent fans, always use to see them dressed as empty seats
Guest Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 From our second half performance alone we shouldn't have won. Would've taken a draw but not too fussed tbh, early days and the first half passing and pressing shows how far we've come. i think our problem as was the case in the second half at Barnsley is that we're willing to sit back and act comfortable opposed to taking chances and acting on ithings although I do agree we should've be 2-0 up in the first half after bobbys miss
City Rocker Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Interesting, so you have the opposite view to that of @Olé in his thread I wasn't at the game today, but was pleased to read of the big step forward from where we were last season. Now you're telling me it ain't so? Anyone else who was in Birmingham today have a view?

We were insane in the first 30 mins linking up really well with high tempo. Unfortunately we didn't get that second goal and they had a strike that i feel 9/10 times would not have gone in. Encouraging signs I would say even though it is early on. If we keep dominating early on as we have done so far we have nothing to worry about.

Experience suggests if we carry on failing to capitalise on our 'nice football' that confidence will sap away and we will revert to type. Play a bit of good stuff but ultimately capitulate to the mentally/physically stronger team. This is basically what we've seen for the majority of the last three seasons.
Spike Posted August 12, 2017 Posted August 12, 2017 Regardless the first goal was 100% our own fault, terrible defending on all accounts and no man on the edge of the box to clear leaving an open chance, piss poor structure, communication and awareness. The second goal was just as bad, two players chasing the ball carrier and third backing off and off until the shot came and beat Fielding on the inside post! We've been terrible at the back for a long time now and I see no signs of it changing at all, whilst we look good at playing a possession game we still make costly mistakes at the back in the games that matter. For a while I thought it was certain players but with players coming and going it's still the same issue and the only constant is our coach and coaching staff. We need some serious sorting out at the back. Whilst we're on the note of our coach, I'm still willing to give him time BUT we're now been over 18 months since LJ took over and I see very little progression at all on the pitch. The stadium looks great, the club appears to be getting better in the financial dealings seem to be improving but on the pitch it's a different team that shows no difference in performance. I think it's fair to say in those 18 months we've all know we need a reliable keeper and whilst we've use many different keepers we still haven't found one that improves our team, we still have capable midfielders but none that look strong enough to lead when we're struggling and we continue to go through new strikers season after season.

We didn't play this style last season. In fact the Wigan and Burton games last season I thought thr opposition bested us. I also don't remember us playing this stye under cotts because we played a completely different system. We have been playing with energy and speed and it looks encouraging but my only worry is that we will tire quickly which is what happened today.

Re the first goal. You say there was no structure but I disagree. The structure was there, but a player deviated from it. The way the structure was set saw Paterson patrolling the edge of the box. He gets a bit excited though and anticipates a clearance so moves toward our left, hoping to counter. He's left the edge of the box wide open, so when the ball drops there, Gardner has all the time in the world. Paterson's job during this phase of play was to hold the edge. He failed. For me, nothing wrong with structure there, just application from an individual.

We will tire playing this was which is why the whole squad will be needed. We also seem to abandon some if the close.passing we played in the first half, and got dragged to Birmingham's level. Maybe this was due to the tiredness. I was looking down the barrel of Bannan's strike for the first goal. What a quality finish that was.
