Shaily's Got A Funny Feeling It May Pay Off!

Nothing really new in this piece ......... I used to get funny feelings when Shaily played for us and would try something a bit too clever at the back. Though on the whole he wasn't too bad a player and now has a journalistic job for the PFA.

Thought this quote from Carey summed things up .... "The final straw was being told to stay away from the training ground because I hadn't signed my contract so I feel I have been treated disrespectfully." ...... I'm glad he's gone.

Bristol City: Robins gamble by appointing novice bosses - but Shaily's got a funny feeling it may pay off!

By Mark Shail 21-Jul-04

COUNTDOWN TO NEW SEASON: LEAGUE ONE PREVIEWS

It's been a summer of change at Ashton Gate following City's play-off final defeat at the hands of Brighton. Despite missing out on automatic promotion by a single point, and leading the Robins to third place in successive years, manager Danny Wilson and his assistant Frank Barlow have parted company with the club. Veteran midfielder Brian Tinnion has taken up the managerial reins, after signing a three-year contract, and will be assisted by former central defender Keith Millen.

One blow for Tinnion is that three key players have turned down new contract offers during the close season and since left the club on Bosman free transfers. Top scorer Lee Peacock has signed for Sheffield Wednesday, Aaron Brown looks set to link up with former City boss Tony Pulis at Stoke City and defender Louis Carey has joined Coventry City.

After being at the club for 11 years and playing nearly 400 games, Bristol-born Carey, who was named in last season's PFA Second Division Team of the Year, felt the club's contract offer was not taking into account his experience and service to the club.

"It's a frustration to me that I have seen so much money spent down the years on bringing in players from outside the club who didn't live up to expectations, yet the loyal and reliable local lads, who play week in week out, are given nothing like the same rewards," said 27-year-old Carey.

"The final straw was being told to stay away from the training ground because I hadn't signed my contract so I feel I have been treated disrespectfully."

Two other players to leave the club this summer are striker Lee Matthews, who has signed for Port Vale and midfielder Joe Burnell has joined League Two side Wycombe.

Tinnion has made moves to bolster his squad by signing 21-year-old midfielder Bradley Orr, on a free transfer from Newcastle, as well striker Paul Heffernan, who scored 21 goals for Notts County last term.

The new city chief has also invited former Ipswich striker Alun Armstrong as well as midfielder Darren Caskey to join the club's pre-season training camp. Armstrong, 29, was released by the Tractor Boys at the end of last season, whilst Caskey failed to make an impression at Ashton Gate after joining the club on a short-term deal on transfer deadline day.

"Alun has played his football at a high level and we will have to see if he can help the strikers we already have at the club," said Tinnion. "No-one is doubting Darren's ability but he must prove his fitness if he wants to earn a new contract."

It's a bold decision by the club to appoint a manager and his assistant, neither of whom have any real experience of coaching at senior level. However, both Tinnion and Millen have been around a long time and nobody knows the club better than long-serving Tinnion.

Goalscoring has been a problem for the Robins in recent years (of all the sides in the top ten, only Bournemouth scored fewer goals last season) but if new signing Paul Heffernan can find the net on a regular basis City will surely be up there challenging for automatic promotion once again.

"The final straw was being told to stay away from the training ground because I hadn't signed my contract so I feel I have been treated disrespectfully."

1) If Lou had picked up an injury training with City after he'd refused a final contract who would have been liable?

2) Listening to TalkSport this morning, Arsene Wenger told Patrick Viera to clear out his locker at Arsenal's training ground and not to upset the season's preparations by attending training as he wants to go to Real Madrid. And he's still under contract! - disrespectful or wise? ... the latter methinks.

Yeah, that 02/03 season when we only scored 100 goals was a real bitch...... :dunno:
