Adam Webster - Midfielder (occasional)?

In our current situation (lacking Korey, Pack out of form, Walsh ok, Brownhill up and down, etc), is there a case for Webster in Midfield? I think there is. Easily one of the most comfortable on the ball, brings it forward with his head up, confident and assured. A bit like Hegeler in those qualities, though the German will be off home soon for whatever reason. Plenty of options at the back so not weakening things there. Just a thought ...

Interesting thought OTIB

Can certainly pass and run with a ball

His progress has been quite something considering he wasn't necessarily known/seen as a ball playing CB at Ipswich (I work with an Ipswich fan), and given Kalas came with the bigger reputation including ball-playing- Kalas at Fulham averaged a passing accuracy of 87.1% and 86.9% respectively- is he being deployed differently here or did Fulham make him look better than he was?

Unsure about midfield yet though,.

According to Squakwa FWIW.

Per game, Webster completes 40.53 per game, Kalas 33.35. Webster is also more inclined to make the forward pass than Kalas.

However if LJ persists in playing the wrong shape it doesn't really matter who we play in the role in a sense of improvement- it might make things worse, but it won't improve things.

How do you want to see the team play?

Taking one of the most comfortable on the ball out of the back four could be retrogressive. There are not lots of options at the back if your approach is one that builds through thirds.

If you view City's football as a bit like a step ladder the back four (its first rung) are generally assured on the ball, possession is secure, Lee Johnson has created improvement here including the distribution via the Keeper. Altering that improvement is weakening it if you view that back four as footballers to receive, retain, release possession for the midfield .. That first rung is operating quite well and needs no significant change.

The second and third rungs are not operating fluently … Progress and improvement there is not major change its a consistency of approach.

I wouldn’t get carried away with Kalas’s passing stats at Fulham Mr P

IIRC they swamped the highest passing percentages last season with many of their players in top ten

He might be ok but I think the stats were enhanced by Fulham’s methods and style of play

Yeah, I was wondering about that Bob- good to see you back by the way. Enhanced by their playing style I reckon, Webster's progress though is impressive.

Never mind Webster in midfield isn't Hegeler a midfielder ?

He should be in for Misfiring Marlon , give Packy a break from the spotlight .

If Hegeler isn't considered then he may as well go back to Germany.

Ashtonishingly bad signing for the club and player.

Ultimately, Hegeler between the back 4 and the midfield would be his best position.

Have wondered about something like:

           Goalie

           Back 4

           Hegeler

Brownhill Walsh Pack Eliasson/O'Dowda/Da Silva- one of those 3.

     Weimann /Taylor

It all feels a bit of an awkward fit though that hypothetical shape, not the best balanced- Brownhill is a central midfielder and dropping Pack or Walsh not necessarily the way to go (though Pack's form has been in not too good lately).

Or maybe

       Pack

Brownhill Walsh

Wingers

Weimann/Taylor

Hegeler?

Who is this "Hegeler" that you speak of?

In reference to the OP - Square pegs, round holes. Arguably one of, if not our best defender so far. Remember Louis Carey being played in midfield? No? Well there's a reason for that...

He had a mare Saturday but overall very impressed with him in his play and his attitude

One of the only ones to at least try and make something happen

I would think that something has to be done about the backline as for every "we have great defenders" post they are all part of one of the worst defences in the league!

Perhaps they are not as good as we all think they are

Not by goals against. Believe we are 5th best in the championship on that measure.

Interesting thought but not for me. He's far too assured at the back & to even consider it shows a worryingly lack of depth in central midfield. Even if Korey was fit our options would still be limited. More bizarre recruitment from LJ & MA to blame for this I am afraid. I remember LJ absolutely raving about Hegeler and his previous champs League exploits....now he cant even get on the bench when centre mid seems like it could do with freshening up.

I think some have been overly critical of Pack & Brownhill. Both are exceptional athletes but to be expected to play 3 games a week most weeks without a rest is ridiculous.

How do you know Hegeler will be off soon? Genuinely interested.....he’s probably the player who looks most comfortable on the ball at our club....
