I don’t think it’s quite that straight forward

other wise why 10 qualifiers to be played next year

happy to be corrected if wrong......

Because we would qualify as one of the non-qualifiers if we won whatever this new thing is called.  It’s a bit complicated but I did read the rules once, and found out this is one route to the next Euro summer tourney

Not quite. If we win the Nations League but then don’t finish in the top 2 of our Euro 2020 qualification group (all ten qualification games to be played in 2019), we get a second chance to qualify for Euro 2020 through the play offs, which will be held in March 2020.

The line up of the March 2020 play offs will be determined by the best performing teams in each of the four Nations Leagues who haven’t already qualified for Euro 2020 through next year’s qualification groups. In the past the play offs have featured teams who finished second or third in their qualification group (ie didn’t qualify automatically), but this time the determinant of who makes the play offs will be performance in the Nations League.

I’ve read some people say that the winners of Nations League A will qualify automatically for Euro 2020. This isn’t the case - it’s possible to win Nations League A, finish third in qualifying, and then lose in the play offs (and thereby fail to qualify for Euro 2020).

So England can now finish:

Top if they win, or relegated if they lose.  I think the 0-0 draw has us staying 2nd, whereas a score-draw has us relegated.

Exciting stuff.

Spain could win it despite losing more than us or Croatia.

It is barmy stuff, but at least it is giving squads more experience in playing competitive fixtures

My only experience of watching England play Croatia was the "wally in the brolly" evening when we crashed and burned

We certainly owe them one after the World Cup semi defeat, but will take one heck of a performance to get a win. But what may suit us is it will be played at an FA Cup pace and am sure that was why England started the game so fast last night

Indeed- not only competitive strikers but against teams of their levels.

The groups are in all 4 zones (A-D) pretty well weighted in most cases. No blowouts like top or even mid ranking side v San Marino. Plus it gives a number of sides in C and D chances to win games, get confidence- improve their seedings and use experience of playing a more attacking, possession based game (likes of Macedonia and Georgia especially- can still cause bigger sides issues on their day even now but really developed so far).

Will be like a Cup final on Sunday with all 3 outcomes possible for both- should be a good watch definitely!

Thanks NLR. I’m still confused but I know I can call on you to work it out!

The "Nations League" Final Four will now be played in Portugal next summer. Likely teams Netherlands Portugal England Belgium - England by beating Croatia.

Not a bad summer. ?
