Bullets being dodged

Well.

At 70 minutes (ish) when the second red card occurred, it’s fair to say that the last 15-20 minutes were the most vital of LJs reign so far. Had we failed to win, against nine men, and against a side with Rotherham’s record, I’m sure that the knives would have been out. And somewhat understandably.

Webster (who had one of his poorer but still good games today) scoring really bailed LJ out from some very tricky questions.

I posted on Boxing Day that we seemed up against higher ranked teams, but were outfought against lower teams. That continued today, in spades. We seemed to wait for the ball too much and Rotherham frequently nipped in ahead. In LJs defence, I don’t think anyone expected Rotherham to be as offensive as they were, and it may have thrown us off. Also in LJs defence, as alluded to in @Davefevs ratings thread, I think the attempt at shape was better today. I liked Adeluken and O’Dowda coming central and creating space for the full backs while attempting to get ahead of Fam. Didn’t always work but intent was there.

The issue for me was that at HT it was patently obvious Rotherham were  playing more on the front foot than expected. And we really changed nothing. Until the second red card, it looked like we’d drift to 0-0.

So, in summary - I like the added intent. However, we were again guilty of being outworked by a “lesser” team, and LJ not adjusting to a stance taken by an opponent is worrying. We, or more precisely, Lee dodged a bullet today and the questions that should have been asked are still there for me.

i like the analysis from someone who was at the game. I think Lj also made good points post match that the two offenders had to be red-carded due to our quick passing and ability to go round a defender. Looking forward to Stoke more than home games which is fine, unless you never follow City away. This year has been very good watching us on our travels. so, before the end of December, we just need 5 wins to stay up, a bit more injury luck (Walsh, Smith) or a new signing to be pushing for 6th come the end of April.

New Year? Bring it on!
