Momentum

There were a lot of reasons why last season went south. Tiredness, the comedown from the cup run, Lois Diony amongst them.

However, what I think a lot of us would point to was January. After the Wolves game (yes, late December), we followed up with a 0-5 vs Villa and a 0-3 vs Watford, albeit with a markedly changed side. Even though we were unlucky to lose to Man City, we then had a fairly abject Norwich performance.

Without doubt, some of that was fatigue. But some of it was momentum. We played Watford and made multiple changes - all of a sudden, we lose 4 on the bounce.

This is why I think the selection today was spot on. We could have tried Eisa or many others, but inherently we were on an 8 game run and wanted to protect that. Not necessarily for today, but for the momentum going into next week and the week after. By the time we play Forest, we could and should be 10 games unbeaten and that not only gives us belief, it also alters their mindset.

9 games unbeaten. 3 clean sheets on the bounce. I know, and have said myself, that some of the performances haven't been great, but as an opponent would you not fear a side with that momentum?

I was just about to post along  the same lines, but read your post first.

Getting used to winning is an important as rotating and resting players. 2 wins and 2 clean sheets will reinforce players confidence - the reverse of this time last year.

I agree, but LJ reckons they all had the splatz so he picked who was fit, just so happens it was a good side apparently!

And with that in mind, I'd propose that our defence is the best its been at this level going back to when I can remember we've played at this level (since c1990).

The only realistic GK contender at this level to Niki is Basso - but I'd say Niki's better

Right back there is an argument, and its where we're weaker

Centre half - at this level, have we had better than Webster and Kalas at this level - I'd argue not

Left back - again, an argument and for me the best LB defensively at this level was Scotty, but its not a million miles away.

So, I'd say as a minimum 60% of the back five are the best we've had at this level in the last 30 years (and by default 40 years as we weren't at this level in the 80's). Now that is something to celebrate.

Yeah knew it was something like this mate...I am still a fan of Johnson and the defenders we have signed have improved us

Watching our back four tonight - They looked well drilled , working and moving , as a unit and very narrow / compact

Would put it down on good coaching but not our normal back four so some good leaders out there on top of the coaching aspect (BW?)

Oh FFS.

Can we not?

I can't say I agree with everything @BobBobSuperBob says but if you don't like him, just take it to PM and leave the rest of us to a discussion before another topic goes south.

Cheers.

Good post, lots of good points - although worth noting that after the home defeat to Norwich in Jan 2018, to which you referred, we only lost 2 of the next 8 league games...but we still managed to plummet 9 places...anyway, that’s history....momentum is the key word that you used...it means so much in football...

Think we have more chance of winning games with Famara myself....

Momentum and confidence.

We saw that last season for several months, keep ticking along, not as flamboyant or as technically good but if you can keep ticking along things can improve, things improve playing style can kick on and the 2 can really feed off each other.

Nice little run now.

@Silvio Dante I think we could have got a draw v Norwich- that may have just stopped the rot and got a bit of confidence and stability back. That happens I think the next 2 results the same but we can play a bit more for a point at Bolton. Draw that and suddenly 2 more points- 3 up v Sunderland we're not then needing to go for 5 or 6 as we were and could even add more on the break- little things like that can build runs. Assume the draws at Leeds and at home to Fulham the same, again we can then play a bit more for draw at Cardiff- maybe get it, things can keep just slowly ticking over win here, draw here- suddenly before you know it you're say 8 unbeaten and still in the playoffs. Think top 2 was gone but this sort of stability could have kept us right in the playoff picture...

Huddersfield were pretty awful though Bob we have faced harder games in the championship, but must admit things are certainly looking up for us defence wise.

Sure, accepting  Huddersfield weren’t great but

Watching it on a stream with the high camera position it was interesting watching our shape , particularly the back four  and how they worked as a unit and , ignoring the particular game or Huddersfield , It was interesting and decent

Our back four certainly work , compact , narrow as a unit
