Admin Maesknoll Red Posted July 8, 2019 Admin Share Posted July 8, 2019 Women taking part in sport and playing it to whatever level is great, good on them. But get some originality, the BBC are now talking about “the men’s Ashes starting soon”, why not think of something original for the women’s game instead of hijacking a 130 year old institution. It’s as if they have to copy to make the women’s side feel equal. It does the complete opposite in my view! It comes as forced upon. Absolutely right about the ashes, it is tradition of cricket from the men’s side. Leave it alone.

A bug bear of mine as well. Why must every male sporting tradition, from the Tour de France to the Open suddenly open its doors and fund, timetable, promote, and generally run an equivalent competition for female competitors? Why don't female sports want to establish their own traditions, history and heroics? With the Ashes it is a particular mockery of the Women's game that they play a twisted pastiche of the men's competition. It's the "Women's Ashes" in name (and marketing) only. Bristol Rob
https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/city-women-open-season-at-ashton-gate/ Strikes me as a good opportunity to develop their fan base. Tickets are competitively priced, although all kids going free with a paying adult might have been a nice gesture. But I guess the numbers need to add up somehow. Erithacus
Interesting that the Vixens are going to play at the Gate again - but at three o'clock on Saturday it will naturally clash with the many other local games at that time. Surely some girls or their family members will be playing at the same time and so force a decision to be made. But I take this as a sign that the Women's game is ready to carve a niche out for itself - a bold and positive move.

Yet in it's previous popular era, about 100 years ago, it was well known and accepted that the sometimes large crowds women's football attracted were mostly there for that very reason. In those days even the flash of a lady's ankle was rare so to see so much female flesh on display was a big attraction to the mainly male crowds. It was no secret and not thought of as in any way unhealthy or strange, quite the opposite. That's changed these days, of course. With women less covered up in daily life that aspect of women's football is less of an attraction for men, hence the women's game is mostly geared towards attracting female fans with coach loads of tickets given free to girl's schools etc.

A bit off reading that the Man.Utd women's manager says the WSL needs Liverpool (currently bottom) to not be relegated as they want the 'big name' to help promote the WSL, essentially inferring let's get rid of Bristol City instead. City women's next game is against Liverpool, so a crucial one for them to win.
